As an elected official one of our most important responsibilities is to ensure the safety and health of all those that we represent. I ask as always to please follow the recommendations for COVID-19 protocols. I believe that until many more citizens are vaccinated and herd immunity is reached, this pandemic will continue to be an ongoing issue. With that said, the current COVID-19 county positivity rate is 4.9% (7-day rolling average) and 5.4% as of the February 3rd region-wide testing data. I am hopeful that we can get below the 4% number required to play high school higher risk sports. We can do it. According to the Albany County Department of Health, the COVID-19 case count in the City of Cohoes is thirty (30) today. There are 155 new active positive cases in Albany County bringing the total of active cases to 1220 down from 1246 yesterday. There were 12 new hospitalizations reported overnight, and there are 126 county residents currently hospitalized from the virus, up three from yesterday. There are now 16 patients in the ICU, up one from yesterday. Tragically, there were two COVID-19 related deaths to report since yesterday The death toll for the county stands at 324 since the outbreak began. The number of people under mandatory quarantine increased to 2,511 from 2,400. So far, 56,341 people have completed quarantine. Of those who completed quarantine, 17,496 of them had tested positive and recovered. That is an increase of 174 recoveries since yesterday. The metric that we need to continue to monitor is the gross new hospitalizations per 100k of population. This metric is based upon a 7-day rolling average and is as follows: Capital Region (3.23%) which is below the State average of (4.29%). Not horsin' around... Cohoes High School junior Olivia McDonald is headed to the dressage national championships! McDonald is part of a six-person team that ...placed first in the Regional Upper School Championship on Dec. 12 in Skaneateles. Dressage is a form of horse riding in which the rider and horse are judged on how they perform a predetermined series of movements. McDonald competes as a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), which gives students in grades 4-12 the opportunity to ride in team and individual equestrian events. It’s really exciting. I’ve been riding since I was three, but dressage is relatively new for me, McDonald said. McDonald’s team rides for North Country Horses, based in Gansevoort, NY. At the regional competition they finished tied for first, but won on a tiebreaker determined by the number of first place ribbons captured throughout the event. It was stressful because we knew it was close, but didn’t know the exact standings, McDonald said. The IEA Dressage National Finals are scheduled to be held on May 15-16 in Tyler, Texas.
