‘When folks think of classics, I would want them to think about folks of color. But if classics fails his test, Padilla and others are ready to give it up. I would get rid of classics altogether, Walter Scheidel, another of Padilla’s former advisers at Stanford, told me. I don’t think it should exist as an academic field.’

Oops, forgot about this website! But maybe my friends would be interested to know about this series I’m speaking in on Oct 26 in some great company. I’ll be tal...king about despotics, the ancient aristocratic art of psychological domination, and what it has to tell us about Roman practices of enslavement. In seven months of lockdown I’ve had one (1) idea and this is it. More info at https://anch.sas.upenn.edu//workshop-series-worklife-insti See more

Black Lives Matter. The Department of Classics at Columbia University wishes to issue this statement of solidarity, although we recognize that simply printing such wordsas true and heartfelt as they are (tragically) necessarycomes close to repeating the hollow adage of thoughts and prayers. We are currently working to develop and implement a program of substantive curricular and institutional reform, addressing race and racism, and involving immediate and future action.
Calling all graduates with an interest in publishing: Park & Fine Literary and Media is hiring an assistant or associate to two nonfiction agents. The role requires attention to detail, administrative chops, the ability to anticipate needs, and at least two years of experience at a literary agency (will make exceptions for exceptional candidates from publishing houses or other industries). The environment is fast-paced, standards are high, and the right person will love the work. Title and compensation commensurate with experience. Please send CV and cover letter to [email protected]
Dear friends and colleagues, I'm very sorry to share such sad and tragic news, but I thought that you would want to know. I’m devastated to tell you that our lo...ng-time friend, colleague, and mentor Anton Powell has passed away yesterday after a battle with Lymphoma. The words escape me to articulate this tragic loss of a dear friend and colleague to all of us, and such a larger-than-life figure in the life our discipline in Wales and beyond. He will be missed beyond measure. As soon as I hear of plans for tributes or memorials I’ll pass them along to you and please do so if you hear of anything as well.
The report on the Archaic mass grave found at Phaleron is now available open access in Opuscula, the Journal of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome: https://doi.org/10.30549/opathrom-12-02. Enjoy one of the most spectacular recent finds in Greek archaeology!
