Happy Constitution Day!
Happy 30 year workiversary to our esteemed and beloved colleague, Annie Martinez. Annie first began at the Engineering School (before CC and EN merged together) and has seen the Financial Aid Office grow and change pretty dramatically over the years. From the handwritten FAFSAs and mountains of papers (by the time a student graduated, their FA file was several inches thick) all the way into the 21st century with everything online, Annie has been the voice of calm reassuranc...e to families in panic-mode, as well as the joyful cheerleader, celebrating with every newly admitted student and their families as they call in for advice on how to make their college dreams come true. So many students have adopted Annie as their 2nd mama over the years, coming by the office in search of her encouragement and welcoming smile. She literally dances and sings her way through life with warmth and grace, and many decades of Columbia students and staff have benefitted from Annie’s help. We thank you for your many years of service, for being such an amazing colleague to everyone that has ever worked with you, and for being a friend. Everybody can be great...because anybody can serveyou don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. Martin Luther King Jr.
REMINDER: Fall WEP Applications = Due TODAY WEP Reflection: Zachary Heinemann, Class of 2017 " I was able to do research full time in my lab studying the effects of discrimination on low-income students at Elite Schools. It gave me a chance to learn more nuanced and advanced statistical techniques in R (statistical programming language) as well as develop a large-scale project with my advisor over the course of the summer -- something that is much more difficult and time-consuming during the regular school year!" #WhatWEPdidforme with Zachary Heinemann
Fall WEP Applications are due TOMORROW September 13th. Cosmas Sibindi, Class of 2017 "Last spring, I did immunology research at the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology studying the factors expressed by a certain population of immune cells. This population of cells is believed to be important to how future vaccines could provide immunity to us as it lives in the tissues where the germs initiate infection rather than in the blood. I was able to learn a lot of practical... scientific techniques while also acquiring higher level analysis skills. WEP made this possible by funding me for the entire semester!" #whatWEPdidforme https://www.careereducation.columbia.edu//ho/workexemption with Cosmas Sibindi
