Consultants in Urology has been closely monitoring the rapidly evolving developments relating to the Corona Virus (CO-VID 19). The health and well-being of our patients and staff is, and will always be our top priority. We are adhering to the most updated CDC guidelines and complying with state and local agencies. For added precaution, we have began disinfecting all areas of the office significantly more frequently, including all common areas, patient rooms, check in and c...heck out counters, staff offices and lounges, bathrooms, door handles, seat arms, and all areas of common contact. We have posted signs on all entrance doors advising patients to not enter the building if they have fever, any lower respiratory symptoms or flu-like symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, or body aches, or if they have traveled to or have come into contact with anyone who has travelled to any high risk areas in the past 14 days, including China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran. We have also asked any patients who have been diagnosed with, or have come into contact with anyone diagnosed with CO-VID 19, to please contact their primary care physician or their local emergency room for evaluation instead of scheduling an appointment at our office. Consultants in Urology is committed to keeping our facilities as clean and sanitary as possible. Here are some helpful reminders to keep yourself safe: - Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to kill germs. - Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. - Avoid eating and drinking with unwashed hands. - If you have to cough or sneeze, please cover with your elbow or a tissue, and use hand sanitizer afterward. - Use hand sanitizer after touching any public surfaces. - If you have cold or flu symptoms, especially fever, please stay home or contact your primary care provider. Consultants in Urology is dedicated to providing a safe space for you and your family to receive the finest urologic care and we will continue to monitor this situation closely and comply with recommendations and instructions from our local and state health departments. Do you experience: - Urinary Frequency - Waking Up to Urinate - Weak Urinary Stream - Urinary Hesitancy... - Stream Intermittency - Sensation of Incomplete Bladder Emptying or - Urinary Urgency ? Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a diagnosis characterized by proliferation of the cellular elements of the prostate. BPH is the most common cause of the lower urinary tract symptoms mentioned above. Typically men over the age of 50 develop prostate enlargement. The prostate is a gland that is found only in men. It helps make semen, the fluid that contains sperm. The prostate surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body.) As men age, their prostate gland grows larger. When the prostate is enlarged, it may constrict the flow of urine. Nerves located within the prostate and bladder may also play a role in causing bothersome symptoms including urinary frequency, urinary urgency, hesitancy, interrupted or weak stream. There are a number of treatments for BPH which may significantly improve quality of life. Treatment options include medication and minimally invasive prostate procedures which can be performed right in the office. If you think you may have Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, contact 718-233-1300 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Marc Plawker or Dr. Joel Sherman. We look forward to seeing you.

Kidney stones affect more than half a million people each year. Affecting both men and women, kidney stones can be severely painful and demand immediate attention. The kidneys perform the essential function of removing waste products from the blood and regulating excess fluid levels. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. Dehydration, obesity, diets high in salt and certain medical conditions can cause you to develop stones which can interfere wi...th normal kidney function. Painful or frequent urination with back pain and visible blood in the urine may all be signs of a kidney stone. When urine has a high concentration of minerals and salts they can form kidney stones. Kidney stones can start off small but can grow larger in size. Some stones may stay in the kidney and not cause any problems at all while other stones may move from the kidney down to the ureter ( the tube that drains urine from the kidneys into the bladder) If the stone is too large and cannot pass through the ureter it can become obstructed block the flow of urine and become very painful. Emergency procedures to relieve the obstruction may be necessary. Kidney ultrasounds, X-rays, and CT imaging are just some of the ways to diagnose kidney stones. Increasing your water intake, medication and pain relievers may sometimes help to manage small stones. However, large stones that become obstructed and cause pain may need surgical intervention. Ureteral stent placement to open the ureter and treat obstruction of the urine flow may sometimes be needed on an urgent basis. Shockwave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy are other surgical procedures for kidney stones.
