There is a dichotomous classification of bruxism with awake and sleep categories. The usual blame is on STRESS! But study of Sleep Bruxism in Respiratory Medici...ne (CHEST 2016 Lavigne et al) defines a protective mechanism, Rhythmic Masticatory Muscle Activity RMMA. I see the problem as an extension of sympathetic dominance and a loss of parasympathetic tone, resulting in many associated issues including Hypertension, GERD and RLS. #bruxism #clenchingandgrinding #sleepmedicine #RMMA #masseter #GERD #TMD #dpdental #linguadontics

This is a great video from a few years back now.... I look a bit younger :) It shows how the carbon dioxide levels change immediately when breathing route chang...es. Did you know that better (in this case increased) CO2 levels (from breathing a more normal volume of air due to exclusive nasal breathing) helps improve blood pressure since CO2 is a natural vasodilator. It also helps with better oxygen release from the blood to the cells due to the Bohr Effect. Furthermore, nitric oxide is inhaled more when you nose breathe. NO is not only a vasodilator but also is anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Hope you like the video. See more

Corona time has one advantage. My colleagues have some time to take care of our publications. Maybe ;-) Many congratulations, Dr Guido R. Sigron and Nathalie Rü...edi. Today we received the good news that our new paper "Computer based three-dimensional analysis of isolated orbital floor fractures pre and post reconstruction with standard titanium meshes and hybrid patient-specific implants" was accepted. I am very happy, because this project ("medical 3D printing at the point-of-care" / "[hybrid]-PSI") is very important to me. The paper will be available as a download soon (#Open #Access). #medical3D #3Dprinting #point-of-care #3DPrintLab #UnispitalBasel #Basel #Switzerland #orbital #reconstruction #hybrid #psi #craniomaxillofacial #surgery #SwissMAM #medical #additive #manufacturing #DBE #UNIBAS

Reading about Edward H Angle (1855-1930), founder of scientific orthodontics. Father of modern malocclusion classification. He taught orthognathodontics. He pur...sued to correct any kind of malocclusion without resorting to extraction. He was able to recognise the influence that orofacial musculature has on the shape of dental arches. Occlusion is kept stable by intraoral and perioral muscles. He believed that mouth breathing was the most important factor for Class II Div 1 dymorphosis. He intuited We are just beginning to realise how common and varied are vicious habits of the lips and tongue, how powerful and persistent they are in causing and maintaining malocclusion, how difficult they are to overcome and how hopeless is success in treatment unless they are overcome. #angleclassification #malocclusion #functionalorthodontics #myofunctionaltherapy #mouthbreather #tongue #lips #correcthabits #dpdental
