[Senior Spotlight: Carol Zhang] What mindset did you have going through college and what do you think helped shape it? I think nowadays my mantra is everything matters, but nothing matters that much. I think once I discovered that it kind of changed the way I went about college, whether that be academically or socially. I feel having that mindset is really important, especially in an environment where everybody kind of acts as though the smallest things will affect the rest... of your life. I’ve been in a bunch of classes, like in my freshman and sophomore year, where I was taking core CS classes and they were so hard for me. I was struggling and having regular mental breakdowns, and I feel, looking back, I see that version of me and I think Why did I care so much?. When it comes to things you know aren’t going to matter in five years, I feel it’s okay to not prioritize your time to them and to understand what’s important to you and what you want to focus all of your efforts on. A big mistake a lot of underclassmen make is spreading themselves out too thin and treating everything like it matters. Another thing would be finding a group of people you vibe with. At the end of the day, having a support system in college is probably one of the most important things you can have. Finding friends and being able to connect with people on a deeper level and just having them be there for you is something I’ve discovered at college. Seeing April Song definitely helped me get into that mindset. She looks at everything in a really light-hearted way and she’s able to see the fun in everything and the good side in everybody. Also David Wang and Jess Zhao. All three of them were definitely my role models. I really looked up to them and how they always seemed to know what to say- just naturally very funny and very sociable people. People just gravitated toward their energy. I think CUABS definitely introduced me to a whole new side of Cornell that I didn’t think existed my freshman year. Something that CUABS made me realize is that you can learn something from everybody as long as you put in the effort and be active and genuinely curious. Once you do that and give everyone a chance, you’re going to learn something that could have the potential to change your life.
[Senior Spotlight: Emil Irimpan] What influence has CUABS had on your personal development? Shoutout to April Song. There was a party that I went to that had a lot of CUABS people before I joined. I remember Eri and Henry were there, and everyone was just getting along. I think that, socially, just affirmed this mentality of go do it. In the pursuit of that, you’ll find people who are equally driven and like-minded, and you’ll be able to create a community around that. The...Continue reading
SENIOR SATURDAY : This Senior Saturday, we had the chance to chat with Grant, Sam, and Richard. Check out what they had to say about our questions below! - What advice would you give to your younger self? Richard: I think for me it’s not to take things so seriously. I think it’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of college. If you don’t get into clubs, it seems like the end of the world. If you don’t get the internship you want, it seems like the end of the ...Continue reading
