Darrell Cheung MMH '01, owner of Satori Health & Wellness, shares with us what it means to him to be a #hotelieforlife: For me, it’s about healing one Hotelie at a time. I’m in a lifelong pursuit to improve my own wellness and those around me. I’m excited to build the community and bring an awareness of the different ways to extract the most out of life. I am grateful for other Hotelies in Toronto that have supported me and continue to support each other. Dear SHA Family, I regret to inform you all of the passing of National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Co-Founder Michael Burkeen ‘91. Michael passed away Thursday evening with his family at his side after dealing with his bout with cancer throughout the year. Michael Burkeen partnered with Evan Frazier ‘92 in the Spring of 1989 to pitch the idea of expanding SMH into a national organization (NSMH). Michael was also a founding member of the NSMH Legacy Fund at... The Pittsburgh Foundation in 2015 and served diligently on the Legacy Fund’s Executive Committee as Treasurer until his passing. In the mid 1990’s, he had contributed to establishing the NSMH Alumni Fund Scholarship Fund at POISE Foundation. Michael loved NSMH and was completely committed to its success. He is a legacy in our school’s history. Memorial services will be live streamed on the Facebook Page of Miramar Memorial Services Friday October 23, 2020 1 PM PST/ 4 PM EST. Monika Moser PDP '99, Regional Managing Director at Wilson Associates, shares with us what it means to her to be a #hotelieforlife: "My own father worked for over 60 years in the hospitality business, starting at the age of 14 and retiring as a General Manager at the age of 80. His family comes from a long line of Bavarian restaurateurs and Munich brewers. While I did not believe to continue this family tradition as a young girl, I nevertheless worked in restaurants and weddi...ng events every weekend to round up my pocket money. Realizing that I enjoyed this, I finally continued my career and education in hospitality. The service industry was and is in my nature and I am indeed proud to be a #HotelieforLife. Being part of this community of like-minded hoteliers for over 20 years has been an enriching and successful experience. Being engaged in the network, assisting fellow hotelies and bringing people together has always been a priority in my career. Over all these years it has definitively been extremely rich in beautiful new connections and long lasting friendships on both a professional and personal level." Rudy passed the morning of September 29, 2020 peacefully with his wife Annelie by his side in Berchtesgaden, Germany. Rudy was an icon and inspiration for Hotelies worldwide and a mentor to many.
