Hello OO fam. It's time for another Human of Odyssey.... the excellent Emma Harte Hey friends! I’m Emma and this is my second year as an Outdoor Odyssey guide. I’m in the College of Arts & Sciences studying Biological Sciences with a concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and minors in Climate Change and Spanish. Outside of Odyssey, I’m involved in Cornell Running Club, Cornell Outdoor Education (where I teach hiking and snowshoeing classes), and research in an ent...omology lab. I love trail running, backpacking, paddling, and reading books while lying in my hammock. I went on the 4 Day Backpacking in the Finger Lakes trip before my first year at Cornell and I loved it! It was lots of fun and a great way to get to know other students before orientation. My guides were able to give us advice about life at Cornell, and talking to the other students on my trip made me realize that other people shared my fears about college. I would highly recommend participating in Outdoor Odyssey - it’s the best way to start your Cornell experience, in my (slightly biased) opinion! Take Emma's advice. Introducing another Human of Outdoor Odyssey, the astounding Amy Shen! Hi hi! I’m Amy and I’m going to be a senior guide :O for Outdoor Odyssey. I’m majoring in Environmental Engineering and interested in learning more about sociology and urban planning/design. I’m also one of the captains of varsity Women’s Gymnastics. It’s a grand time. When I’m not doing schoolwork or at practice, I spend my time exploring campus, reading the Sun, and cooking dinner with friends. Odyssey h...as been such an important part of Cornell for me, and it’s not something that I would’ve expected. Before Odyssey, I was a shy bean who had never gone backpacking, never pooped in the woods, and never gone so long without a shower. But going on this trip right before move-in (and later becoming a guide) was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s a warm home that has been there for me since the start. Just being around the goofy, kind, and welcoming humans of Odyssey has helped me find my own groove at Cornell, and I feel lucky to be in such an incredible program. Signing up for this pre-orientation trip is something I can’t recommend enough just do it fam!! Hopefully I’ll see ya there ;) Take Amy's advice! Hellooooo! We hope everyone is staying safe and well. We are working hard to make sure that OO runs smoothly this fall, and we wanted to show off some of the guides who will make it happen!! Welcome to our ~ Humans of Outdoor Odyssey Series ~ First up, our lOOvely marketing chair Julia Luna. HIYA!... My name is Julia, I grew up a hop skip and jump away in...Ithaca! Wooot!! I love Ithaca and the Fingerlakes and when I am sad I go on the Fingerlakes Land Trust website because I am a nerd. I study Environment and Sustainability. Aside from guiding Odyssey, I also teach classes for Cornell Outdoor Education and work at the Lab of Ornithology. I live in an on-campus co-op house with a bunny <3 and it has been an incredible experience! I really enjoy swimming in waterfalls, hiking, paddling, waking up for the sunrise but by far my favorite times outside are the connections you make with people and the experiences you can live together! Being outdoors has also helped be through many mental health issues and helped me gain confidence and leadership skills. OH I’m also learning the harmonica, love cooking, and crunchy peanut butter is better than creamy, objectively. Odyssey has not only given me a really strong sense of community but also taught me many so many different skills. I didn’t grow up camping or backpacking and Odyssey was my first experience doing it and I haven’t stopped ever since! I honestly cannot even imagine what my college experience would have been like with COE + Odyssey. To meet lovely guides like Julia, register for a trip today! https://odyssey.coe.cornell.edu/register
