Our museum is thrilled to receive a donation of items from Ketcham’s Store! Charles Ketcham was a postmaster in Mountainville who later opened Ketcham’s Store. The Ketcham family were earlier settlers in the area. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Mountainville was named Ketchamtown in honor of Samuel Ketcham who built a mill on the Moodna Creek. No need to pack your bags, we’re going on a staycation! After 1883, visitors from New York City could travel upstate faster via the new West Shore Railroad. With more vacation destination options, the boarding houses in Cornwall had more competition which caused the tourism industry in the Cornwall area to decline. The Grand View Hotel/Antlers Hotel advertised in an 1890s brochure as "but ten minutes walk from the steamboat landing and the West Shore and Ontario & Western Rai...lroad stations." The hotel was on Hudson Street, before the entrance to Cliffside Park and Dock Hill Road. The hotel’s grounds offered guests the space to enjoy outdoor activities or relax. For those of you who are doing more walking during this pandemic, you might look for a clue as to where it once stood. You can see a set of stone steps that are the only thing remaining of The Grand View Hotel/Antlers Hotel. No need to pack your bags, we’re going on a staycation! If staying in a resort house does not suit your style of travel, how about acquiring a summer home? The Bay View Villa was the summer residence of Barnet L. Solomon. Solomon purchased the house from Josiah G. Clark in 1869. It was located at Cornwall Landing. After Solomon’s death, the mansion became a boarding house and changed names, including Eureka House and Villa Pennisi, under different proprietors. No need to pack your bags, we’re going on a staycation! The Cornwall Mountain House boasted Spacious parlors, luxurious lounging room, broad and shady verandas, combine[d] to make it a favorite lounging place of the fashion of New York City. This impressive structure also had a dancing pavilion and full orchestra. Guests could take in the cool, mountain air without the fear of malaria-causing mosquitoes. Cornwall was considered a health spot, ideal for individuals who had l...ung and throat troubles and those with malaria. The Mountain House was appropriately named - it was located on Storm King Mountain. The Cornwall Mountain House was built by Mead and Taft in 1867, and it was originally a sanitarium. After the resort closed its doors around the turn of the century, the building was sold to be used as a tuberculosis sanitarium. Before it could reopen, the building was partially destroyed by a fire. James Stillman purchased the property, and his son removed the remains of the building and built a new home.
