Patunia had 10 piglets last night! We are up to 53 very mischievous babies. The older ones like to make my days more interesting by finding ways to escape their pens, stealing tools and empty feed bags, and are constantly under foot while I do chores.
Patunia is ready to pop! Her and daughter RW are both due Sunday!
How many beers does it take to make a pig lay down? A question I never thought I would need the answer to, until today. Dot did not have a normal delivery, she refused to lay down while delivering her piglets. Then refused to acknowledge that she had piglets to feed, moving away from them and standing for hours this morning to avoid feeding them. I have never had a sow do this and was at a loss for a way to help. So I read every piece of information available on the interne...t looking for a solution, and came across a message board that said to give her beer. The beer helps a nervous mama relax and lay down, which allows the babies to nurse. Time will tell how this litter of 7 makes out. I am hoping for the best. In case you were wondering, the number of beers needed is three! Update: Pib fed her litter off and on throughout the day yesterday, but was becoming very aggressive towards the piglets. For the piglets safety I removed them and gave them to another sow. PJ farrowed last night around 8pm with 8 more babies. So all together she is now caring for 15 babies.
Pib had the third litter of the year yesterday! She has 11 happy little ones, and her sister Pepper is an excellent auntie.
Red our Duroc/ Old Spot cross had 10 babies sometime last night! This is our first litter of piglets out of gilts that were born here! Also I am so excited to have a barn camera to keep an eye on everyone, even when I am not out there! No more surprise litters!
Winter farrowing is only a couple of weeks away! The girls are getting a huge upgrade in housing this year! A heated barn with new 12'x12' farrowing pens. Marge volunteered to test out our new accommodations first, to see if any adjustments need to be made before we bring up her rowdy daughters.
The kids had a fun filled day showing one of our 3 month old gilts! We are excited to see the piglets out of her and litter mates in the spring! Until then we are sold out!! What a great way to finish up our first year of farrowing!
Pig show preparations are underway! Everett is showing Dot the daughter of his first show pig Marge.
Our latest litter of GOS and Duroc cross piglets love the free range life. We only have 2 left out of this litter, ready to go to their new homes in two weeks! Text or call for more info! 5853537381
Amelia's chickens are ready! We have some smaller chickens and some giant chickens available but most fall in the 6 to 7 pound range at $15 each! You will have a hard time finding locally raised chicken for less than this!
