CPC Little Star Early Childhood Center held a book distribution event today! Thank you to Gale A. Brewer, Manhattan Borough President for joining us! Our children received books illustrated by Grace Lin. The books reflect the diversity of our families and educate children on how everyday experiences can highlight math problem-solving. We hope to share with parents how to teach using everyday experiences and enhance children's at-home library. Especially at this time of height...ened awareness of racism, we chose books inclusive of the diversity of the community so that the children can see themselves in the books. The pandemic has made it harder for families to get educational materials for their children, so this book distribution event should help our families. #advancingourcommunity

James Moran, Care Design NY, writes in Gotham Gazette: "New York State is at a crossroads when it comes to caring for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD). Government officials have a choice to continue divesting from the system leading to irreparable harm for our most vulnerable citizens or they can right the ship by maintaining the investment in the organizations providing support to the majority of individuals in the state with I/DD. "One ...such group of organizations is Care Coordinated Organization/Health Homes entities created by the state in 2018 to provide critical and essential services to people with I/DD. Now, less than three years later, these essential organizations are facing another 23% cut in Governor Cuomo’s Executive Budget plan, which, if enacted, would total almost 40% cut over a period of just over a year. If this cut moves forward, it would result in the dismantling of care coordination and advocacy for 110,000 people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities." https://www.gothamgazette.com//10183-governor-budget-threa See more

Wayne Ho @waynehois, CPC President and CEO, spoke at the New York City Employment and Training Coalition Virtual Conference Series along with Diana Caba (Assistant Vice President for Policy & Community Engagement for the Hispanic Federation), Jerelyn Rodriguez (Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Knowledge House), and Traci Scott (Vice President of Workforce Development of the The National Urban League) on the role of racial and economic justice in workforce developmen...t and building an inclusive recovery. Watch the discussion at https://youtu.be/iXeVDs-X6c8. In the wide ranging conversation, the panelists reflected strategies for developing workforce programs and services to break down barriers to hiring nontraditional talent and building economic access for historically marginalized communities; how public policy and advocacy can and should further investments in equity driven workforce services; lessons learned on employer engagement, particularly in holding companies accountable to BLM and DEI commitments; the need to build programs that meet people where they are in terms of skills and interests in order to best serve them in their path to career growth; and the critical role of wraparound supports such as childcare and mental health, as well as soft skills such as communication and digital literacy. "If we are going to have economic justice we know that race, gender & sexual identity are all linked to economic opportunity. That's why we have to have a critical eye on making sure we do lead as an anti-racist organization & understand that all communities are different, with different needs and ways to achieve equity and access to economic opportunity, said Wayne Ho, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chinese-American Planning Council, and NYCETC Board Member.

When COVID-19 hit NYC, it struck Asian American & Pacific Islander communities with a wave of fear and uncertainty driven not only by the pandemic but also all the anti-Asian and xenophobic threats. #OurCityNYC is a testament to the strength of Asian American & Pacific Islander communities and the faith we have in our city to embrace everyone that resides in it; because our power comes from us being united, not divided. If you live in Flushing, Queens, you still have time to give feedback on how to promote economic mobility! Please complete this community survey by November 14th, 2020. It can be accessed in multiple languages English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Bengali both in hard copy and online at http://bit.ly/FlushingMobility The Flushing Mobility Collaborative, comprised of CPC and 5 nonprofit organizations Asian Americans for Equality, The Chil...d Center of NY, MinKwon Center for Community Action , Queens Public Library, and RIVER FUND -- launched a community survey to better understand and solve economic challenges in Flushing. This work is a part of the Mobility Learning and Action Bets (LABs) initiative funded by Robin Hood. Formed in September 2019, the collaborative created this community survey in consultation with a Community Advisory Group, made up of individuals who live and work in Flushing, and with a Partners Advisory Group, made up of cross-sector stakeholders who have different expertise in Flushing. The collaborative determined the survey’s main areas of focus housing, meaningful income, transportation, and health by holding a community listening session in January 2020 that was attended by the collaborative, the Community and Partners Advisory Groups, and members of the public.
