Unfortunately it seems to be the beginning of firecrackers-for-no-apparent reason season. Dogs become frightened and can bolt. It's good to check NOW that your dog has current VISIBLE identification on him.

DOES THIS DOG LOOK FAMILIAR???? HE WAS HANGING OUT ON SOMEONE'S porch in the vicinity of Spy Rock Rd., Pound Ridge. He has a collar, no tags and has since wandered away.

As we approach "holiday season" remember your pet. 1) lots of extra family members could mean stressed out pets and/or a greater chance of escaping . Give your pet a safe place to hang out and time to be away from well-meaning guests who want to pet him. Make sure pet has ID on in case he bolts. 2) people food....can cause upset stomach so just keep your pet on his regular diet. Watch out for easily reached chocolate which is toxic, turkey, grapes, etc....best to keep foo...d out of reach.... 3) alcohol....don't set your drinks down where the pet can reach it. Alcohol is harmful 4) decorations.....keep the pet in mind-some are toxic, some get ingested ....again, out of reach and supervise the pet. Why take a chance that you'll spend your holiday in the pet ER.....take some preventative measures and be aware what's going on in your home.

More and more unidentified , meaning no collar-no tags, lost and found dogs have been reported. Less than 16% of lost dogs are returned (nationally) to their rightful owner!!!! You can increase the chance of getting your dog back by making certain it has ID including phone number (yes, really...found a dog recently with the dog's name only!! It had NO PHONE NUMBER, NO ADDRESS AND NO OWNER'S NAME....so I could call the dog by her name but she couldn't tell me where she lived!!). Microchipping is great, however remember that the general public does not have access to the chip-reading scanner so a VISIBLE form of ID is going to get your pet home more quickly. If he isn't identified the return rate will likely be less than 16%!!!

In order to be a good dog owner I think you need to be a responsible person or at least have the capacity to act in a responsible manner when it comes to your pets! Letting your dog chase and intimidate people ( and/or bite them) is unacceptable, unlawful and obnoxious! Even just running off the property towards a person or another dog causes chaos. Do you want your dog to be in harm's way? Car vs. dog....not a pretty sight! Mostly avoidable, though! ... We are seeing more and more incidents where dogs are breaking through radio transmitter-type fences (brand names familiar to us as Invisible Fence, Canine Fence, Pet Stop,Dog Watch, etc....none singled out!!) resulting in bites and other concerns for safety of children, other dogs, etc. ( bites = $$, confinement orders and more $$ in the way of civil suits) A "fence" is a structure preventing the crossing of a boundary. An "Invisible Fence" is an oxymoron by definition and an invitation for trouble if you assume that it will contain your dog NO MATTER WHAT!! You owe it to your fellow residents (not even direct neighbors exclusively) and your dog to keep it safe and secure under your control on your property. NO MATTER WHAT!! You are responsible for your Dog's well-being and its behavior. (Just a public service announcement from a Dog Control Officer, professional pet sitter and "dog person, owner and lover" of some easy and some very difficult dogs.)
