Tonight, before the kids are nestled all snug in their beds, with visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads, tell them that many years agojust a short sleigh-ride from Crotona famous author was tucking his grandchildren into bed on Christmas Eve and he read them one of his poems called A Visit from St. Nicholas.

Here’s part of a map showing of the Croton waterfront in 1850. Lower Landing was the name for the area where Senasqua Park is today, it was one of two docks for ships as early as the 1700s and the location of Croton’s first railroad station. Originally Grand Street (then called Lower Landing Road) began directly across the tracks. Upper Landing was the name for the area where Croton Yacht Club is today. It also dates to the early 1700s. Today’s Brook Street was then called Upper Landing Road. There were other docks associated with brickyards along Croton’s riverfront to the north and south of the area depicted on this map.
