A message to CSEA members from Stacey Hagerstam: CSEA Partners, While 2020 is nothing like we ever could have imagined, I am proud of how our small but mighty organization has come together to continue opportunities for our athletes across the state, forging even deeper personal connections with them and their families in this unprecedented and unsettling time. I have every confidence that what we have learned and built in 2020 will prove to be a strong foundation for our wor...k over the next 50 years. Special Olympics New York is so much more than sports for our athletes. It is a lifeline. For many, it is their only outlet for emotional, social and physical activity. Soon after the stay at home orders began, one of our athletes a leader in our organization suffered so greatly with anxiety and depression that he lashed out at family members in uncharacteristic anger. He needed emergency medical assistance. The doctor’s prescription to his mother? Get him back to his Special Olympics routine as soon as possible. This is what we are working so hard to do. We have recently begun implementing a return to play that is purposely slow and cautious. We will need more equipment, more facility space and more safety supplies than we have ever needed before. Still, we know that for health reasons and, for many, because of where they live, not all athletes will be able to return as quickly as their teammates. For those who will be delayed, we are committed to continuing to serve them at home. Special Olympics New York never charges its athletes to participate in this life-changing programming. We rely heavily on sponsorships and grant funding as well as ticketed and peer-to-peer events like the Polar Plunge to cover our costs. Many of our signature events have had to be cancelled this year due to the pandemic, and those we are offering have been scaled back significantly in order to protect our athletes and the community. If you would like to support our athletes by participating in a Polar Plunge or other event near you, please visit specialolympicsNY.org for more information or contact me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Stacey Hengsterman President & CEO Special Olympics New York

#ADM2020 CSEA's first ever virtual ADM has kicked off! Our theme this year is 'Rising to Meet the Challenges.' It will be an exciting week for CSEA delegates; ...reconnecting, learning how CSEA is Rising to Meet the Challenges and how we can be the best leaders we can be. Digitally communicating with members effectively and representing members in a socially distanced and responsible way given the limitations of the pandemic is paramount. We are also going to be discussing some important issues of our time that weigh heavily on our members and all Americans as we participate in meetings and union business sessions. Stay tuned for more updates! #UnionStrong #RisingToMeetTheChallenges #CSEA See more
