We are proud to announce the addition of two critical pieces to our Footnote Forum section. These two articles dive into the harsh realities of asylum seekers and the need for greater transparency and humanity in the process. As a public interest journal we stand proud to advocate for marginalized communities, in this particular instance we want to give voice to immigrant communities who historically have been oppressed and put under immense pressure. Under this administration we have seen a heinous disregard for human life and decency in the immigration context for that reason it is imperative to educate and inform others. We urge you to please take a minute to engage with these exquisite pieces! Special thanks to all those involved in the process! @ CUNY School of Law

Proud to announce the publishing of Richard Rivera’s article on the effects of repeated parole denials. The piece is compelling, real and helps shed light on a topic that is seldom spoken about. We want to thank Richard Rivera for all his work and congratulate him on such a wonderful piece. Please check out the article on our website under the footnote forum tab.

Dear Future Author, CUNY Law Review knows that this is an extraordinary and uncertain time, and we want this to be reflected in the work we’ll be publishing for our next issue. The issue will focus on Lawyering in Crisis. However, we don’t plan to limit the articles to the ways that impacted communities are responding to Coronavirus specifically. This pandemic is a magnifying glass on the systemic inequalities that our communities have been fighting against forever. Our syste...ms are breaking down, and more people are seeing its flaws. But for many communities, like low income Black and Brown communities, trans and gender non-conforming folks, disabled and sick folks, sex workers, and incarcerated people, and many others these flaws are not new. Therefore, we are seeking articles that broadly focus on how major disruptions can and do affect the legal community, however the author may interpret that. All final draft submissions are due by JUNE 1st: [email protected] CUNY Law Review E-Board 2020-2021

Happy Friday! Another reminder that if you have not yet done so, please visit www.my2020census.gov to complete the census so that you and your community gets #counted! The Law Review is still awarding two law student scholarships this summer to students and CUNYLR staff, who are doing unpaid public interest work or studying for the bar exam during the summer, so that they are able to pay for housing, food, and transportation. The amount of the scholarship awarded is contingent upon how much funding we raise. Be sure to complete the application by this Sunday, April 26th! Link: shorturl.at/fpX15

Please see below a paper co-authored by Dean Bilek, distilling preliminary ideas for jurisdictions to consider in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which will not allow for administration of the July 2020 bar exam in the usual manner. We urge you to read and share with your networks. "The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has profoundly disrupted life in the United States. Schools, including our own, have transitioned to distance learning and across the country, businesses have sh...uttered, and employees are working from home whenever possible. Medical experts advise that at least some of these restraints will continue for 18 months or moreuntil a vaccine is developed, tested, and administered widely. Even if some of the most rigorous restrictions have been lifted by July 28, prohibitions on large gatherings are likely to remain. Attempting to administer the bar exam to hundreds of test takers in a single room would endanger the test takers, staff administering the exam, and the public health. At the same time, it is essential to continue licensing new lawyers. Each year, more than 24,000 graduates of ABA-accredited law schools begin jobs that require bar admission. The legal system depends on this yearly influx to maintain client service. The COVID-19 crisis, moreover, will dramatically increase the need for legal services, especially among those who can least afford those services. We cannot reduce entry to the profession at a time when client and community demand will be at an all-time high."

As some of you may be aware, CUNY Central has transitioned to distance-learning for the rest of the semester and is cancelling all upcoming events on-campuses due to the Coronavirus situation. As such, it is with our deepest regret that we must announce the postponement of the 25th anniversary CUNY Law Review Symposium which was set to take place on April 3rd. This decision was out of our hands, but we understand the decision and join the administration's goal to keep our com...munity as safe and healthy as possible amid changing circumstances. Please be on the look out in the coming months for information about the rescheduled date for the symposium - likely in the fall closer to the general election date so that we can still appreciate the election reforms that have taken place across NYS in the past legislative session. Lastly, although we will not be hosting our symposium this spring, the Law Review is still awarding two law student scholarships this summer. Please consider sharing the link to our GiveGab below. Summer scholarships are essential in ensuring that CUNY Law students and CUNYLR staffers, are able to do public interest work during the summer and are able to pay for housing, food, and transportation during their summer internships.
