It’s retirement week for our R.O system at the Heifer Farm! What’s an R.O system? A Reverse Osmosis system is an expensive but crucial piece of equipment for our operation. For the last 15+ years the R.O worked hard to filter our well water to create high quality fresh cool water for our heifers everyday. Do cows even care about good water? You better believe it! Studies show that with high quality fresh tasting water, cattle can grow 16% better than those who are given... well water or unpurified water. This means we will have healthier, heavier girls! What happened to the R.O? Our rural community of Elba now has access to city (public) water. We are excited to be able to have the opportunity to give our heifers even higher quality water than what the R.O could produce.

One thing Elba is known for is onions, our town sign jokingly says at the bottom "Onion Capital of the world". This video from @ShayFarmKid is a great Q&A from farmer to consumer about the behind the scenes of onion grading and processing. We currently are grading and processing our own onions, but on a much smaller scale than Shay! Enjoy

We have been BUSY this week at the Heifer Farm! We want to give a shout-out to our awesome herd staff for pulling this entire week together flawlessly, volunteering to stay after to unload trucks of calves at 7,8 and midnight this week, and their only request was a pizza lunch...Deal! We welcomed our curious little friends here this week in a bitter sweet way. While we are always thrilled to be trusted to raise the next generation of someone’s dairy operation, this story is ...a little different. Last Monday evening these girls and their herd mates lost a portion of their farm to a tragic fire displacing many and sadly killing more. Farming isn’t pretty everyday but we wanted to Thank our staff for their willingness to work extra hard this week all for the animals well-being, the other farms who quickly hauled the cattle off their home farm and gave them a place to stay while we set up barns for them, and our new client for trusting us to help rebuild their program. #FridayFeels #Farm365 #manyhandsmakelightwork See more
