More TV work; most of the problems encountered are with the transport stream encoders. They are either malfunctioning or misconfigured. There is a lot of information in the TV transport stream, so it is easy to miss something.
New Studio Build, running Category cabling in raised floors.
We have been working on a few Medium Power Digital TV transmitter installations. These are Anywave MPTV UHF transmitters. As part of these installations, we sweep the line, antenna and band pass filter to make sure they are a good match an establish a base line in case there are any problems in the future. Transmitter Power Output is in the 1.6 to 2.6 KW range with the Effective Radiated Power of 15 KW.
Field repairs to a 17 year old Broadcast Electronics AM1A transmitter. This is the first failure suffered by this unit after 17 years continuous use. The large power supply capacitors dried out and need to be replaced along with some other components. At the moment, the owner does not want to spend money on a new AM transmitter, so we fix instead of replace.
Third and forth generation Nautel V series FM transmitters use Tectrol TC91S-1465 power supplies, Nautel part number UG-39. They fail once in a while and neither Tectrol or Nautel will repair them. We ripped one apart and discovered it is a fairly standard switching supply, which mostly fail in the usual ways. As we take care of seven of these transmitters, we built a jig and now fix them in our shop.
One of our clients wanted an emergency studio built at their transmitter site. We were able to repurpose an AudioArts R-5 console to the task. There are two microphones and provision to connect a laptop computer for audio recording and playback. An existing POTS line was connected to a reconditioned Symetrix TI-101 (modified for use at an AM transmitter site) to use as an interface for local officials to get on the air and broadcast directly to the public, if needed.
Under the plan of branching out into new fields; a low power digital TV transmitter installation we have been working on. Transmitter is from SYes in Italy. Antenna is an ERI AL8W 302E.
Moving out of an old studio facility and could not leave these warning lights behind. They are original RCA MI-11717 circa 1960 or so. They had a bi-pin 115 V incandescent light fixture, for which the bulbs are no longer available. I cleaned the 60 years of radio station gunk off of them and replaced 115 VAC fixture with a 12 VDC LED module. They look great!
I cannot think of a more important time for Community Radio than right now. Kingston Community Radio has been on the air for 18 years. They where scheduled to move out of their former studio building before the Corona Virus outbreak. The landlord for the old building said; COVID-19 or no, you gotta go. We built the new facility in a few days and there are still some finishing touches to go in, but it is up and running.
Did somebody say radio station stickers? Why yes, I have a few of those. This is my collection from the last 30 years or so.
Installing and configuring a GatesAir FMXi-4g 4th generation HD Radio importer/exporter. This particular installation has an HD-2 and runs HERE traffic (BTC) which required a few extra steps to get running. Overall, this is much better than the earlier HD Radio equipment. I particularly like the DTAC which automatically adjusts the delay between the analog and digital HD-1 signals
