As Spring arrives, beautiful flowers begin blooming all around us. The fresh awakening of our gardens and the dawning of warmer days brings joy to our hearts and puts a spring in our step. To many people, this time of year also means allergies, which may show up as sneezing, itchy eyes, head congestion and scratchy throat. Acupuncture offers a non-invasive way to treat allergies. The symptoms and signs that are so familiar to allergy sufferers during this time of year relate ...to imbalances in the meridian and organ systems of the body. Acupuncture not only helps to eliminate allergy symptoms but also assists the body in achieving a state of balance by clearing the underlying causes of allergies. Some of these organ systems are involved in the production of Wei Qi (pronounced way chee), which is similar to the Western concept of the immune system. Wei Qi functions to protect and defend the body against foreign substances. When Wei Qi is strong and abundant, we remain healthy. When it is deficient, heath is compromised and we become vulnerable to foreign invaders such as dust, mold, animal dander, bacteria, viruses and pollen. People who have a Wei Qi deficiency are prone to allergies and frequent colds. Most seasonal allergy symptoms are experienced above the neck. Acupuncture can treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies generally or locally by directly addressing the points around the congested areas and increasing a smooth flow of energy between the head and the rest of the body. We can open up these channels and restore them to their natural state by placing small, sterile needles directly on points where symptoms are especially active to allow the congested energy to dissipate. Remember acupuncture can address the root causes of your allergies in addition to alleviation of symptoms. Acupuncture treatments, along with adjunct therapies such as herbs, dietary changes, massage (tuina) or exercise accelerate the healing process in order to balance, build and support the body’s Wei Qi. When the body is brought back into full balance, symptoms disappear and health is restored. Best of health! Happy Spring Dawn Mamkunian L.Ac. See more
