What else did 2020 need? How about a major snowstorm? Yes, please. This week a powerful nor'easter hit New York City and the northeast with heavy snow and high winds. With at least ten inches recorded in Central Park, it was the biggest December snowstorm in New York City in ten years since a blizzard in 2010 dumped twenty inches. We made our way (carefully) around New York City amid the snowstorm and were able to enjoy a few peaceful moments of freshly fallen snow before it turns to dirty slush. On a chilly day this week we checked out the incredible holiday light display at Hudson Yards. More than two million white lights are featured throughout the shops, the Vessel (which has extended holiday hours), the Edge observation deck, and the outdoor areas. On a trip to Uganda, artists Gillie and Marc Schattner were able to observe a family of critically endangered mountain gorillas in the wild and were moved by what they saw. Their sculpture, King Nyani, is based on the dominant silverback gorilla, the head of the family that they observed. King Nyani, Swahili for gorilla, is the largest bronze gorilla statue in the world. How large? His hand is large enough to fit two to three people, or an outstretched child. Visitors can view King Nyani in person through May 2021 at the Bella Abzug Park in Hudson Yards, just across from the Vessel. What else can you do before or after seeing the gorilla? You can vote! Although DUMBO is known for its iconic waterfront views of Manhattan, look closer and you’ll find many colorful murals hidden or tucked away in the underpasses of the BQE as well as under the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. Artist Emily Caisip’s has a mural titled "Moment of Gratitude" that depicts tall plants reminiscent of the high rises continuously being constructed in New York City. The beloved High Line has re-opened! Now requiring a timed ticket, the High Line has re-opened at reduced capacity and with additional safety protocols in place. For those who need to get out of the house for a walk outside, now is a perfect time to check out the High Line’s vibrant foliage and art, including work by American artist Sam Falls. For his piece, Untitled (Four Arches), Falls created four ceramic archways using original steel rail tracks from the High Line. Each of the four archways is dedicated to a different season in the park. To design the piece, Falls collected plants from the High Line over one year, embedded the plants in ceramic, and fossilized them with colorful pigments. What else?
