Dobbs Ferry Historical Society 02.02.2021

Just listed Zion Episcopal Church has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The church dedicated in 1834, was enlarged in 1853, and again in 1870. Washington Irving, and Alexander Hamilton’s sons, James and Alexander, Jr. , served as vestrymen there. The church, at 55 Cedar Street, sits on land donated by Perter Van Brugh Livingston, whose brother, Philip, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.... The National Register is the nation’s official list of properties worthy of preservation Zion was featured as a clue in this year’s DFHS’s Road to Freedom’s Do -it- Yourself scavenger hunt. See more

Til next year On December 13, 1992, the Society held its first annual Clara Mead Eggnog Holiday Party. The event, a success from the beginning, is a way to honor Clara who left her family home at 12 Elm Street to the Society for its headquarters. Clara tweaked a recipe for eggnog that she saw in a December 1954 issue of The New York Times and from that year until her death in 1991, served it up to friends at a holiday get together at her home. Photos from the 1995 and last s...eason’s eggnog parties. Covid-19 has forced the cancelling of this year’s event. Beer Here: Brewing New York’s History, a Zoom program, will take place on Jan. 10. On Cedar Street The Embassy Theater, located on Cedar Street, (today’s Stolen Moments), opened in November 1928. In the 1960s it became the Pickwick Theater, and was the home to summer theater featuring Hollywood celebrities and Broadway stars. The Theater went through several iterations including an X- rated art house before closing its doors in the 1980s. On September 12, 1933, at about 3:30 a.m. the theater was the scene of a bombing that blew out the building’s front w...indows and damaged the ticket booth and front entrance. Residents were sent fleeing neighboring buildings onto the street. Nearby Zion Episcopal Church suffered cracked walls. The bombing was believed to be the result of a labor dispute over the June firing of two union film operators who were replaced with a single non-union worker earning less wages. Picketing had begun in July and recent vandalism had led to a police presence there. The NRA (National Recovery Administration) participated in negotiations. See more
