Having diabetes may increase the risk of thyroid disease. The link between diabetes and thyroid disease is not well understood. There are multiple ways on how one can affect the other. Type 1 diabetes carries a much higher, and clearer, risk of developing thyroid disease. This could be due to Hashimoto's disease being the most common thyroid condition. Both Hashimoto's disease (which causes hypothyroidism) and type 1 diabetes are autoimmune conditions. Whenever someone has an... autoimmune disease, they are more likely to have others. The relationship between type 2 diabetes and thyroid disease is not as clear. Some studies suggest a higher risk but others don't find a significant risk. If someone has type 1 diabetes, it is important to screen for thyroid disease. How often to check is not known. I tend to check about once a year and whenever there are symptoms of thyroid problems. For type 2 diabetes, we may be able to screen less often. If you have diabetes, make sure you have been tested for thyroid disease. Our days of wearing face masks aren't over yet. While both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are more than 90% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, we still don't know whether they prevent you from spreading the virus to other people. That's why experts strongly advise that everyone mask up, and that includes anyone who has received the vaccine. Tap the link in bio for more info from experts including when we might be able to safely put our masks away

Autoimmune conditions tend to "run together." Here are the autoimmune conditions that are most frequently associated with vulvar lichen sclerosus: Hashimoto Thyroiditis- the body turns on its thyroid tissue leading to decreased thyroid function, called hypothyroidism. Graves Disease- malfunction of the immune system leads to release of abnormal antibodies that act like TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), leading to an overproduction of the thyroid hormone, called hyperthyroi...dism. Alopecia acreata- the body attacks its own hair follicles, leading to hair falling out in coin-sized clumps, usually on the sides or the back of the head Vitiligo- pigment producing cells in the skin stop producing pigment, leading to loss of skin color in patches, usually on the hands, face, and genitals. Pernicious anemia- low red blood cell count due to lack of vitamin B12, leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness. The most common of these by far is autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto or Graves), which can be found in 12-16% of women with VLS. Although current guidelines do not recommend that people diagnosed with lichen sclerosus need to undergo screening for other autoimmune diseases, it seems reasonable for those with LS to have yearly bloodwork with a CBC (complete blood count), TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and BMP (basic metabolic panel). #lichensclerosus #autoimmune#thyroiditis #gravesdisease#hashimotothyroiditis #alopecia#perniciousanemia #vitiligo#lichensclerosusawareness See more

Three Stages of Autoimmune Disease I'm thinking a lot about autoimmunity these days. I'm teaching two courses on autoimmune disease this term. However, I'm also thinking about autoimmunity because we know that infection can increase the risk of autoimmunity in people who are genetically pre-disposed. With all of the people in the world getting infections this year, there's a high likelihood that we will see an increase in autoimmunity in the future....Continue reading

OKAY . I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH When your gut is healthy you have a better chance at staving off infections. Those people with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity that are all having very bad outcomes from COVID 19 all have a common denominator !All these conditions are associated with negative changes in the composition of the gut mirobiome. And this is a combo possibly from medications as well as DIET. -... There was a preliminary study that showed that less-than optimal gut microbiome was highly correlated with proinflammtory cytokines and that certain gut microbiota can predispose individuals to severe covid-19. The reason may be because coronavirus enters the body by binding to the ACE2 enzyme, which plays an important role in the regulation of intestinal inflammation and affects the microbes that play a role in diseases of the heart and lungs. This may mean that healthy gut micro biome prevents some COVID-19 patents from experiencing that big cytokine storm in severe cases. Heres what I’m doing, besides the obvious - Im drinking a lot of tea! The polyphenols in tea increase healthy microbes and reduce pathogens in your gut, which helps to keep your micro biome in optimal balance. Tea phenols also have anti viral properties as well! - Teas highest in polyphenols= Green, black, oolong, butterfly pea flower, hibiscus, lemon grass, lavender, - Getting rid of the aspartame laden gum i used to chew every single day. Artificial sweeteners alter the gut bacteria in a way that causes glucose intolerance. It also causes metabolic abnormalities which leads to dysbiosis and a whole other shit ton of health issues to follow. - Finding time to destress. This is something we are not aware of so much. Prolonged periods of stress can impair your gut bacteria and make you susceptible to infection!. For me, its a simple walk, getting in some solo time to just be with myself.

Higher than normal levels of androgen hormones are responsible for a number of PCOS symptoms you may be experiencing, including: 1 Irregular periods One of the early warning signs of PCOS is experiencing irregular or absent (amenorrhea) periods. Normally speaking, periods can come about every 21 to 40 days. But, many women with PCOS can go months without having a period. Your period requires a delicate hormonal balance between FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone but, high a...ndrogen levels can throw this out of whack. The first thing you need to do is uncover the source of your high androgens, done via blood tests: Test for ovarian androgen production via the test - free & total testosterone with SHBG Test for adrenal androgens via the tests - DHEA You also want to eliminate other possible causes via tests such as - prolactin and TSH & thyroid antibodies. Double-check what tests your doc is doing as many don't run all the necessary tests needed to accurately investigate PCOS. 2 Hirsutism (hair growth) Hirsutism is the excessive growth of facial or body hair on women seen as coarse, dark hair that will usually appear on the face, chest, abdomen, back, upper arms, or upper legs. Hirsutism will affect these areas in women with PCOS as they are most sensitive to androgen hormones. After uncovering the source of your high androgens, your next steps become clearer as you can create a holistic plan for yourself to directly address the underlying cause, whether that be insulin resistance, inflammation, adrenal stress, or a combination of the three. 3 Excessive hair loss Your hair grows in a cycle with the actual hair growing about 0.3mm to 0.4mm each day, which adds up to around six inches per year. Excess androgens negatively impact your hair growth cycle as it shortens the ‘anagen’ or growth phase. The hormone DHT is largely responsible for this. Along with focusing on strategies to lower your overall androgens, things like zinc (30mg) and saw palmetto (300mg) can lower the conversion of testosterone into DHT. #healthyPCOS #pcos #pcosawareness#pcoslife #pcossupport #pcosfood#pcosjourney #pcoscommunity#pcoshelp #pcoslifestyle #pcosfriendly See more
