750-Mile Empire State Trail Complete, With Long Island Extension On The Way Over 180 miles of off-road routes were crafted, linking 400 miles of previously unconnected trailway which include activities outside of hiking and biking, such as overnight camping sites and access to cultural attractions By Linda Gaudino... Published January 7, 2021 The Empire State Trail is officially complete, giving bicyclists and hikers 750 miles to adventure through New York’s iconic landscapes ranging from New York City, Buffalo and the Adirondacks. In 2017, N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo first introduced the plans to build the project, connecting 20 regional trails to create a continuous pathway across the state. Over 180 miles of off-road routes were crafted, linking 400 miles of previously unconnected trailway. "There's no trail like it in the nation 750 miles of multi-use trail literally from Manhattan to the Canadian Border, from Buffalo to Albany. Not only does it provide an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and history of New York, but it also gives New Yorkers from every corner of the state a safe outlet for recreation as we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic," said Gov. Cuomo during his announcement last month on the trail’s completion.

Clock given to Holocaust center on Long Island tells family's story By Jodi Goldberg Published 2 hours ago Glen Cove... FOX 5 NY Family heirloom donated Rosette Priever Gerbosi says a mahogany art deco clock was the only family possession that remained after the end of World War II. Her brother brought it with him from France to the United States. GLEN COVE, N.Y. - Rosette Priever Gerbosi remembers like it was yesterday. The mahogany art deco clock that hung inside her family's home in Paris was a symbol of success. "I used to take my little doll carriage, we had a large dining room table and I used to walk around and around," she said. "It brings back some happy memories as well as some bittersweet memories." After the Nazis invaded France in the 1940s, she went into hiding and so did the clock. Her brother, Bernard, joined the French Resistance. Her parents were arrested, sent to Auschwitz, and ultimately died in the gas chambers. "The clock was a link to our past, a link to our beautiful, wonderful, family life," she said. After Allied forces defeated the Nazis in 1945, Rosette returned to Paris to find that all of her belongings were gone. Her brother managed to retrieve the clock from a neighbor. When the two reunited in New York, the clock was the only thing Bernard brought with him. "When he got off the ship, he was cradling a large object in his arms it was the clock," she said. It stayed at her brother's home until he died last year. Rosette's son, Rob Fishman, is vice-chair of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove. He held onto the clock until he made the decision to donate the family heirloom. "We want the clock to really be representative of what the world was like during this time and how the clock's journey through all the adversity and the horrors ended up back in our hands," Fishman said. The museum tells us the clock reveals a story about perseverance. "We hope people will take away some sense of the history of the Holocaust and perhaps these days in particular some sense about the need and ability to be resilient," said Thorin Tritter, director of museum and programming at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center. It also tells a story about time.

Historic Long Island lighthouse awarded $30M contract for restoration By Eyewitness News Thursday, January 14, 2021 12:35PM... MONTAUK, Long Island (WABC) -- The pricey restoration of a centuries-old New York landmark got the green light Wednesday. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced a $30.7 million contract was awarded to restore the historic Montauk Point Lighthouse. "The historic Montauk Point Lighthouse is a New York treasure, but erosion and the weight of years are threatening to wash it away," Cuomo said. "The state is committed to working with our federal partners to prevent that from happening and preserve this landmark for future generations of New Yorkers to explore and enjoy. The estimated two-year project to safeguard the landmark lighthouse from shoreline erosion is expected to start this spring. Montauk Point Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in New York state, is a national historic landmark. "The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the historic gem of Long Island. For decades it has served as a beacon for mariners and facilitated the commerce that made New York State one of the most prosperous States in the Union," USACE Commander Col. Matthew Luzzatto said. The lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington and constructed in 1796.

Mall In Nassau County Sells For Nearly $30M, Report Says Zak Failla 01/06/2021 4:01 p.m.... The Sunrise Mall on Sunrise Highway on Long Island sold for nearly $30 million, a fraction of what it went for when it was previously sold in 2005. Sunrise Mall Holdings LLC, a joint venture led by Manhattan real estate investment trust Urban Edge Properties, paid $29.7 million to purchase the Massapequa mall from Westfield, the company announced this week. The 1.2 million-square-foot mall previously sold for more than $140 million in 2005. The new deal also calls for upwards of $6 million in contingency consideration funds. Key tenants at the mall include Macy’s Sears, and Dicks Sporting Goods, though nearly 35 percent of the mall is currently unoccupied. The mall’s largest vacant space, which formerly was home to a JC Penney location, has been empty since it closed in 2017. Sunrise Mall is a unique asset with a prime location in a dense, attractive region along the southern shore of Long Island, Jeff Olson, CEO of Urban Edge, said in a statement. This acquisition provides a terrific opportunity for Urban Edge to leverage our redevelopment expertise in repurposing underutilized land and creating value.

Woman Collecting Valentine's Day Treats For Shelter Dogs, Cats A volunteer who built a wall of peanut butter for shelter dogs is now collecting treats to sweeten Valentine's Day for homeless pets. Lisa Finn, Patch Staff... Verified Patch Staff Badge Posted Sun, Jan 10, 2021 at 7:28 pm ET LONG ISLAND, NY Homeless cats and dogs on Long Island have a caring cupid working to make their Valentine's Day special. Valerie Sanks, of Rocky Point, is a volunteer for the Brookhaven Animal Shelter who made headlines recently when she asked for donations to build a wall of peanut butter for shelter dogs to enjoy. Now, Sanks is working to make Valentine's Day sweeter for dogs and cats, she said on the Blankets for Buster and His Friends Facebook page. Sanks said she is looking for "Cupid's cuties" to donate boxes of Milk-Bones, any size, or Temptation cat treats for the "shelter babies" in facilities across Long Island. She's set a goal of 250 boxes or bags of treats, to be divided up and delivered to shelters during Valentine's Day week. As of Sunday, 118 boxes had been donated, she said. The treats can be sent to P.O. Box 335, Rocky Point, NY 11778. "Very few things bring us as much joy as our pets. Giving them their favorite treat makes us as happy as it does them," she said. The Cupid's Cuties effort, she added, "is about making the shelter animals feel as special as our own. It's been a tough year for all of the volunteers who have been unable to spend time with their favorite furry friend. This Valentine's Day we want to make sure they all have treats to make them feel as loved as possible." Tina, one of those who donated treats, said, "It feels so great to give, knowing tails will be wagging and kitties will be purring at every shelter in town." For years, Sanks has devoted her life to giving back to homeless dogs. She's hosted sleepovers for the dogs to shower them with affection, planned birthday parties and car rides, helped a dying dog realize her bucket list of dreams, and organized blanket drives. Rosemarie DeMaio reached out to Patch to describe Sanks' dedication to homeless dogs. "During the holidays she has a blanket drive and has collected thousands of. blankets for homeless animals; she literally drives all over New York to deliver them," she said. Sanks also spotlights dogs looking for their forever homes, sharing their stories on social media to help spread the word, she said. She met Sanks when her dog, a 5-pound Shih Tzu, ran away, DeMaio said. "She was a complete stranger but could she the despair in my posts," she said. "Valerie showed up at my house to help me look for her. We got a call of a sighting and Valerie went to the location with a grill at 1 a.m. and cooked bacon in an attempt to lure her out of the woods. She didn't come out but Val didn't give up. We found her 10 days later," she said. "She is just an amazing person."

Laid-off chef starts nonprofit kitchen on Long Island By Jodi Goldberg Published 2 days ago... It started with a fresh chicken parm for his grandmother. And then the chef realized he could help others. He enlisted the help of newly unemployed hospitality workers like him. Together they formed Carroll's Kitchen in Bellmore. "I can't really sit home," Carroll said. "This was pretty much my best option and I love doing it. I love helping people." The nonprofit cooks and delivers well-balanced, nutritional meals across Long Island. People who can pay can order from the website. Half the proceeds go to local organizations that help Long Islanders. The rest of the money is used to put chefs to work in his kitchen to continue the mission of helping people struggling with food insecurity due to the coronavirus pandemic. "We've had over 100 chefs, 10 on staff," Carroll said. "Money raised through donations probably $100,000," The nonprofit relies on donations and volunteers. It has fed over 33,000 people. Their goal is to hit 100,000 meals this year. "Food insecurity is a huge issue on Long Island," Carroll said. "We're here to battle it and feed as many we possibly can with the resources we have." Alexandra Murray was also out of work. Now she volunteers her time. "It's really, really rewarding seeing the look on people's faces when you give them food," she said. Carroll plans to continue cooking for the cause indefinitely. "Once you start helping people it's near impossible to stop," he said. "I think this is where I'm going to go forward with my life."

Long Island Teen Builds Peer Tutoring Website To Streamline Learning During Pandemic By Steve OvermyerJanuary 8, 2021 at 7:25 pm NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) In-person tutoring completely stopped when schools went virtual.... On Long Island, a teenager not only thought of a solution, he created one. Lucas Diaz is preparing for the SATs. He’s taking free lessons made possible because of Blast Off Tutoring, a site that streamlines the process. It was built by Mitchell Meyer, a junior at Plainview High School. I just wanted a simple site that was easy to use, Meyer told CBS2’s Steve Overmyer. And hopefully the whole process of you can get a tutor within a day. That was my goal. Meyer saw a need. All National Honor Society members must complete 50 hours of community service. But because of the pandemic, the typical paths to achieve that were closed. LINK: Click here to learn more about Blast Off Tutoring. Mitchell created the platform and he hit on something by making it mutually beneficial and free. Tutoring is not cheap, exactly. So, being able to go on the free platform, it’s a pretty big advantage, said Diaz. Tutoring sessions can cost up to $50 an hour. But these are free and peer-to-peer. The best teachers come across as your friend. If you have a friend that’s teaching you, instant chemistry, Diaz said. I feel like you can really learn and connect better. There have been some moments where I was just able to tell them a formula and he was just like, ‘Wow! That’s how you do that?’ said Srijan Sai, another Plainview High School student. Not only does it help you in school, but it make you enjoy school more. Because you know what you’re doing, said Diaz. What message do you think that you’re giving to every other high school student with regards to creating something? Overmyer asked Meyer. If you just have a motive behind something, just do it. Worst case, it doesn’t work, Meyer replied. And if it doesn’t work, then what? asked Overmyer. Then you learn. You learn from creating the process, said Meyer. That’s a formula for success.
