I thought to go a bit into depth while we are on the topic of #sugar. Sugar is basically a type of carbohydrates with a sweet taste. There are 4 different types of sugar: Glucose is the sugar level in our body and is what you need to monitor if you have diabetes. When the system gets too much simple carbohydrates it can lead to glucose not being able to be used up and therefore leading to an overload. Sugary foods and drinks will do that. Inflammation or stress can also add ...to it. Glucose is created in the body from sugars, starchy carbs and more, which is used as fuel that gets transported and utilized by every cell in your body. Fructose is what naturally sweetens our fruits and is also found in honey or agave nectar. #Fructose is also controversially added to processed foods as high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These high sugar levels in our foods if taken excessively can lead to several health problems like weight gain and diabetes which in turn puts us at risk for other diseases. Sucrose contains one fructose and one glucose molecule and is in everyday terms called table sugar extracted from sugarcanes. It is a natural carb found in fruits, veggies and grains but is also added to sweeten many foods. Note that the fructose from HFCS or table sugar needs to be converted into glucose by the liver before it can be used as fuel and hence increases the risk of fatty liver disease. Lactose is the sugar found in dairy products. Have you ever heard of milk having sugar? Well this is it, milk contains most #lactose of all dairy products with up to 13 grams lactose in one cup serving. People who are lactose intolerant can experience symptoms like bloating, gas and diarrhea because their body can't digest the lactose in dairy products. While we are on the topic of detoxing and eliminating #sugars I wanted to make a note on blood sugar. My blood sugar is on the higher side, which puts me in the prediabetic category. I got diagnosed after a period in my life, where I went through mold exposure and lyme disease. These increased my inflammation levels and with inflammation our blood sugar levels go up. Since then, even when I eat super clean my blood sugar is on the higher side. What I found was that a Paleo di...et with limited carbs makes me feel better. Shockingly in the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2020 the CDC discloses that 10.5% of the US population suffers from #diabetes and another 34.5% of the adult population has prediabetes! This means we need to get more conscious about the amount of sugars we consume and how to reduce inflammation in our bodies. If we think everything in moderation it works but let's look at what foods make our glucose levels spike. Here I’m listing some foods that should be consumed in limited quantities to avoid blood sugar level spikes: Refined carbs like white bread, pasta and rice. Sugar sweetened drinks. They contain no nutrients and for example in Coke you find 10% of the content is sugar! And it has no nutritional value. Fast foods - most often contains lots of sugar! Fruits. Also contains lots of nutrients which is good but just control your intake. I don’t do well with a lot of fruits. Starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn contain more carbs than non starchy veggies. Which will lead to a higher blood sugar response in our bodies. Nondairy milks - If you can’t handle lactose then look out for sugar free alternatives! Alcohol leads to blood sugar spikes and it is a liver toxin. That is why we get intoxicated! ‘Detox’ is such a widely used term. Why detox? Detoxing is something we do everyday. Our body is an organism which breaks compounds (like food) down and then assimilates them as building blocks for every cell in our bodies. Not all compounds are good for use and have to be transformed to be used, and there are always waste products, such as toxins, which the liver breaks down and then pushes them further downstream to the intestine and kidneys to be excreted.
