I just came back from an awesome vacation where I tried really hard to protect my skin from the sun by using not only sunscreens but also protective clothes. I would like to emphasize that if you use sunscreens at least SPF 30 broad spectrum you are avoiding 97% of dangerous solar radiation! But you do need to apply enough (1oz for the body plus more for the the face) and reapply frequently (every 2-4 hours).
