Edgar Levy studied at the Art Students League under Jan Matulka where he met the gifted painter, and his future wife, Lucille Corcos (depicted here). After marrying, they moved to Brooklyn Heights where their circle of friends included Adolph Gottlieb, Smith and Dehner, Lois Shanker and Mark Rothko. John Graham, himself lionized by a generation of painters, wrote in his System and Dialectics of Art that Levy was one of the young outstanding American painters of that time. ... Levy exhibited by invitation with The Ten. He was among those American artists who most thoroughly articulated the basis for what would become Abstract Expressionism; Levy’s work embraced #Cubism, #Fauvism, and #Expressionism while asserting an original - sometimes rugged and sometimes witty - approach to the struggle between #abstraction and non-objective painting. Unusually inquisitive throughout his life, Levy secured a job at the Harlem Hospital autopsy room in order to study anatomy as a young art student. Later in life he studied advanced mathematics at Columbia and attended international scientific conferences in Europe. Edgar Levy (1907-1975) Portrait of Lucille, 1928 Oil on canvas 36 x 28 in.

Burns Night, celebrated today in the UK, honors the iconic Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote the New Year’s Eve anthem, Auld Lang Syne. New York City Street Scene. This watercolor by #NewYorkCity born Alan Gussow, was painted in 1951 while he was a student and had just decided to pursue a career as an artist. It’s a rare early example of his lifelong interest in the watercolor medium. In 1953 at age 21, Gussow became the youngest American to be awarded the Prix de Rome. ... In 1977, Gussow received the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award for Art. Throughout his career, he published numerous articles, essays and monographs including the book, A Sense of Place: The Artist and the American Landscape (1998), which paired four decades of American landscape painting with excerpts of the artists’ writings. Both this book as well as his previous publication, The Artist as Native: Reinventing Regionalism (1993), were accompanied by full exhibitions which traveled to museums and galleries nationwide. On this #Inaguration day we share this presidential story from the gallery’s history! Babcock Galleries tracked down this portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Gilbert Stuart in 1927. Described as "one of the rarest pieces of American art that has ever been out of the United States," its whereabouts was unknown for 25 years. Mr. Babcock's assistant, Carmine Dalesio, traced the painting to a great-grandnephew of Jefferson's in Scotland, and crossed the Atlantic to purchase and retri...eve it "at a price said to be the largest ever paid for a picture by an American artist." The painting's discovery and the purchase price made headlines and caused quite a sensation at the time. The "Edgehill" portrait hung in Jefferson's home in Monticello during his lifetime, and was said to be Jefferson's favorite. Stuart painted portraits of the first six Presidents of the United States. The image from his portrait of George Washington, can be seen on the one-dollar bill. Today, the painting is jointly acquired by The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, and Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia.
