Reminder Effective November 1st in New York State. All backseat passengers are required to wear a seat belt, including passengers of ride-sharing services. ... Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York.

This Halloween Weekend, Sunday, November 1st, 2020, a new seat belt law goes into effect in New York State. All passengers must buckle up regardless of age or where they sit in the vehicle. Buckling up is required in personal cars and when riding in a for-hire vehicle, including on app-based trips. The penalty for a seat belt violation is a fine of up to $50 - and up to $100 and three points for the driver if a child under 16 is not properly buckled.
