Happy Election Day! I know many of us are anxious today. Anticipating the potential unrest. Boarding up our businesses. Cancelling appointments.... Maybe even considering avoiding the polls today. I would be wrong to dismiss feelings of worry as America has a strong history of election day violence. Today is the 100th anniversary of the worst election violence seen in the United States. November 3, 1920 That was the night the devil got loose in Ocoee Armstrong Hightower, survivor of the Ocoee Massacre In the 1920 Election, coordinated efforts were made to register African Americans across the South. In Ocoee this effort was supported by two prominent African American businessman, Mose Norman and Julius "July" Perry. They helped register Black voters and paid the poll tax for those who couldn't afford it. Ocoee was a strong KKK stronghold and these actions were met with intimidation including a march of 500 KKK members through the town before the election. On Election Day, July Perry was the first and only African American to vote. Mose Norman followed and was turned away. He returned later that day only to be chased away by an intimidating mob. After the polls closed, the town gathered and headed to the home of Julius "July" Perry, where Norman was thought to have taken refuge. Perry drove away the initial mob with gunshots, killing two men and wounding one as they tried to enter his home. July Perry, his wife, and daughter all sustained injuries. Perry was seriously injured and captured in a nearby cane field. He was lynched and his body was hung from a light post to intimidate other African Americans from voting. The mob laid waste to the African-American community. The homes, businesses, and churches of the black community were reduced to ashes. Only the school house remained because it was county property. The survivors asked for permission to collect and bury the dead. The town leadership granted them a day to do so and local officials followed with a stern promise-Flee or die. The surviving 300-400 people fled the town, leaving behind property, businesses, and See more

Dr. Chaniece Wallace. Mother to Charlotte Wife to Anthony and now a statistic... ... Dr. Wallace died this week from preeclampsia. She joins Amber, Sha-Asia, Kira and countless other Black Women who have died while giving birth. The fear the grips pregnant Black Women is both crippling, devastating, and unfair!! News like this only further magnifies the inherent dangers of Birthing While Black. Black mamas, don’t lose your shine... Dwell in a space of love and bliss Educate yourself about your risk for disease Discuss with your MD strategies to minimize poor outcomes. Choose a doctor that understands your risk Find a hospital that is committed to the health of Black Women As a medical professional, I admit that we are part of the problem. We have to actively unteach racism. We have to actively educate our doctors, nurses, residents to stop minimizing our complaints. We have to create programs that speak to the needs of our community. We have to offer our patients the best of ourselves and our profession. This includes interventions you deserve including blood pressure machines, lab tests, progesterone, medication, cerclage, high risk consults, appropriate and indicated delivery and more! Chaniece is best of us. She is all of us. Rest in Power Mama, Doctor, Friend, Sister, Wife. Dr. Wallace, I honor your memory with activism, education, and commitment to Black Mamas everywhere. #blackmamasmatter Heartbroken, KPC #blackwomen #blackwomenmatter #birthingwhileblack #preeclampsia #blackwomenshealth #labor #blackdoctors #maternalhealth #maternalmortality #pregnant #pregnancy #health #expecting #blackmoms #prenatal #prenatalcare #chaniecewallace #blackexcellence #healthdisparities
