Intellectualizing our emotions basically thinking about our feelings abstractly rather than connecting to them physically is a way we attempt to avoid emotional pain. Although this keeps us mentally disconnected from difficult feelings, it can also prevent us from authentically processing and letting them go. ... One tip to help more fully experience emotions is to pay attention and notice the physical sensations you are experiencing during them. This helps us connect to what we are feeling in a more authentic way. #therapyinfo #mentalhealth #emotions #EQ #psychotherapist #psychology #counseling #wellness #personalgrowth #personaldevelopment #selfcarethreads #depression #anxiety #stress #therapy image credit: @tyler.spanger See more

Recognizing that we do not need to be granted permission from others to do what think is best is such a simple concept that can be incredibly empowering. Remember: No one else understands your life or your circumstances better than you do. As long as you are willing to accept the consequences of your actionsboth positive and negativeyou are allowed to do what you think is best. #therapyinfo #mentalhealth #psychotherapist #psychology #counseling #wellness #personalgrowth #...personaldevelopment #selfcarethreads #depression #anxiety #grief #stress #therapy image credit: @tyler.spanger See more

Unusually intense feelings/reactions towards othersfrustration, annoyance, sadness, anxiety and/or irritabilityjust to name a fewis 100% expected when sharing limited living (and now possibly working/education) space with roommates/family/partners/children due to #COVID19 Rather than trying to avoid or control our emotional reactions, its usually more effective to directly address the impacts these reactions are having on our relationships. Practicing direct communicat...ion can help to prevent more negativity from developing and can even benefit the quality of the relationship in the long-run. Here are some specific #tips for maintaining #healthyrelationships when sharing limited living space during #socialdistancing: Increase communication by having regular proactive conversations acknowledging the stress everyone is experiencing and normalizing that particularly intense interpersonal reactions with each other might occur During these conversations create an atmosphere of openness to feedback and set a group intention to not take reactions personally Remember to use I based statements (e.g. I’m feeling frustrated with X) instead of you based accusations e.g. You’re always doing X and it’s annoying Practice extra understanding and forgivenesses, both for yourself and others, given the extraordinary circumstances #stayhome #quarantinelife #coronavirus #stuckinside #quarentine #flattenthecurve #teleworking #telelearning #roommates #telecommuting #quarantined #citylife #nycapartments #smallapartment #relationship #family #stressreduction #mentalhealth #psychotherapist #psychology #counseling #wellness #stress #therapy #mentalhealthtips image credit: Tyler Spangler

As part of the larger response to #COVID19, many therapists (including myself) have moved to providing psychotherapy remotely, via video (AKA #teletherapy). At times someone might be apprehensive to start therapy (including in-person therapy) because they believe it might feel uncomfortable discussing personal problems with someone new. So the idea of starting therapy over video can feel especially scary and even prevent people from seeking support. Here, I want to provide ev...eryone with some basic information about teletherapy, how I personally approach my work, and to speak about its general benefits. Overall, the process in video teletherapy is VERY similar to in-person therapy. Although all therapy is unique and personalized, the process typically goes something like this: 1. With the support of the therapist, you will discuss the problems or reasons you are seeking therapy, what you want to be different as a result of therapy, and the ways in which these issues negatively impact your life 2. You and the therapist will work collaboratively to better understand the current dynamics of the problem and identify the past and present barriers to change 3. Drawing from an array of research-based techniques, the therapist helps you develop new strategies to better utilize natural resources, remove barriers to change, and develop new ways of responding Research shows teletherapy is comparable in effectiveness to in-person psychotherapy (and almost always better than no treatment). Its been found to be particularly effective at helping individuals adjust to stressful events, manage life transitions, improve interpersonal relationships, and reduce the impacts of depression and anxiety. If you’re interested in learning more, contact me here or through the link in bio. I’d be happy to explore either working together and/or provide you with additional resources available. #stayhome #telemedicine #teletherapy #telehealth #stayingathome #coronavirus #socialdistancing #teleworking #telecommuting #quarantined #mentalhealth #stressreduction #therapyinfo #psychotherapist #psychology #counseling #wellness #depression #anxiety #stress #therapy image credit: Tyler Spangler
