It is a considered brain disease as it is exhibited by compulsive substance use although they are aware of its harmful effects. It affects the normal functioning of a person’s brain and body. It as well inflicts serious damage to families, relationships, schools, work environment, and ne...ighborhoods. Individuals with severe addiction or substance abuse disorder have an extreme focus on consuming substances like drugs and alcohol to the extent that they lose control of their own life. The most common indicators that a person has an addiction are a serious loss of control, persistent use despite harmful consequences, preoccupied with using, failed attempts at quitting substance use, tolerance, and withdrawal. In addition, people with addiction manifest warped thinking, behavior and body functions. Certain substances alter the brain’s wiring which causes the person to have intense cravings for drugs or alcohol, making it hard for them to stop their unhealthy habit. Substance addiction greatly affects particular areas in the brain that is associated with judgment, decision-making, learning, memory, and control in behavior.
