Gather round kiddos and check out the fossil I found in the basement. Back in the stone ages when we created all artwork by hand, it was a necessary part of the process. Here was the process: You’d get the galleys (columns of text that you had spec’d the font, point size, leading, and column width) from a typesetter (a person who actually/only set type for a living). Then you would cut those up into pieces with an exacto knife, and assemble the pieces into what was called a m...echanical (everything glued down onto a piece of Crescent board hence the term cutty-pastey"). The printer would then make a film from a photo they took of the mechanicals and use that to make a printing plate, which they would use for reproduction. Waxers were used to put hot wax on the back of anything you were gluing to your mechanical board. Wax was used because it was repositionable and less toxic than rubber cement or spray glue (but we used that stuff too). Once the pieces were waxed and applied to the board, a roller would be used to make sure the pieces all stayed in place (although small pieces did tend to fall off). There's so much more to say about the "old days!" Maybe I should keep posting stories about forgotten tech like Rubylith, Letraset, and squink? Hmmmmm...
Do. Or do not. There is no try.
One occupational hazard of being a designer for a few years is that when you look at the message board at church to see what hymns you'll be singing, you know what Pantone color corresponds to each of the numbers...
To honor this special day, we're celebrating with some other April fools by playing BeanBoozled and tasting some really awful jellybeans. Some of the flavors we sampled include, rotten egg, dirty dishwater, stink bug, dead fish, sour milk, and booger. I got booger. The worst part is that it gets stuck in your teeth... so it stays with you for awhile.
EagleView Technologies asked D&R to create a video announcing their new REVEAL imagery. It's incredible how much detail they can achieve from high in the sky. Stay tuned for more from EagleView. Services provided: Concept, graphic design, animation, music selection, and editing.
We all walked over to Clay's desk this morning, stood there for a second in silence, then said, "Clay, we have to talk to you." The fear on his face was priceless.
