Using this book has made a noticeable difference! A student who was plateaued began making progress again. It was exciting! I could see the "wheels turning" as they processed these activities. Even the younger students can learn to do this and are successful in the sound deletion/substitution exercises. This helps the student to learn to "map" words in their brain. They improve their auditory skills while making the requested change to the word. It supports the students under...standing that words are made of separate sounds. This is essential to becoming a good reader. Would this program (or my other two programs, Foundation in Sounds and the Barton Reading and Spelling System) help your child? Contact me- I have times available for two or three more students. The photos show the book and word-list activity. The videos explain the research behind the book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL_vCCP-YtU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKaY7IRj4xU&t=8s See more

This is one of my two pre-reading programs. This is for students who need some prep-work before starting the Barton Reading and Spelling Program. I used Foundation in Sounds for the first time this past summer. What a great program! The student was so into it! We explored the qualities of many of the sounds of our language. With aural, visual, and kinetic input, the student learned how these sounds are made, what they look like, and what they feel like. Explicit instruction and scaffolding helped the student to reproduce, isolate and substitute accurately. Opportunities to manipulate, discuss and practice produced noticeable improvement in sound discrimination, memory and sequencing. The student is now working steadily through the Barton program (book 3) and doing a great job!
