Health Care Reform In 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (also known as the Affordable Care Act or ACA) into law, and its impact reaches beyond medical benefits - it also affects dental care, as pediatric dental is one of the 10 Essential Health Benefits. The ACA imposes many new requirements on certain health benefits to make reasonably priced, comprehensive health insurance available to all Americans and to give people with insurance m...ore security. To meet this objective, medical plans offered to individuals and small groups must include a comprehensive package of services, known as essential health benefits. Essential health benefits must include services within at least these 10 categories: Essential Health Benefits (EHB) 1.Pediatric services, including oral and vision care 6.Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment 2.Ambulatory patient services 7.Prescription drugs 3.Emergency services 8.Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices 4.Hospitalization 9.Laboratory services 5.Maternity and newborn care 10.Preventative and wellness services and chronic disease management The ACA also requires each state to establish a health insurance marketplace (also known as an Exchange) or participate in the federal health insurance marketplace, where insurance can be purchased. However, EHBs can be purchased outside the exchanges as well. Starting in October 2013, MetLife will participate in 25 of the state exchanges offering coverage that will be effective January 1, 2014. In order to meet ACA requirements, MetLife is developing new pediatric dental plans that comply with Essential Health Benefit (EHB) requirements for small group customers (either under 50 or 100 employees, varying by state).
