Steak. It’s what’s for dinner
Yesterday’s babies are off to a great start! Thanks for all the great name suggestions- We’ve named them Jesse (8J) and James (7J). That means we only have 4 babies to go. Nobody looks close, so I anticipate a couple weeks until we have more calvings. I am loving this sunshine and springtime weather!
As you have seen in previous posts, the area behind our barn gets pretty muddy. Since the ground hasn’t froze yet but we are feeding hay, it’s getting pretty soggy. A neighbor and fellow farmer suggested we use the unrolling method for round bales, which spreads out the manure and potentially lays down some grass seed at the same time. This is the 3rd bale we’ve fed like this and find they clean it up well and don’t waste much, which is always a concern. Here’s a short clip!
What do you do when the annual Blonde d’Aquitaine in person meeting gets canceled?? Join friends in VT and watch it together virtually! Cows, kids and friendship are some of life’s greatest blessings
The very first snow
Wouldcha look at those bums! Blonde and Blonde cross.
Yearlings are home! I think they grew pretty well this summer.
Prepping for the next season- that’s all I’m gonna say about that . Hubby is pretty excited about his new pallet forks for the NH from Capital Tractor Inc. and got to break them in unloading grain for the weanling calves tonight. The right tools definitely make the job easier and safer.
Yesterday we said goodbye to 4 of our heifers as they head to nearby farms as replacement females. This morning we send Harrison off to the north country as he gets ready for his job as herd sire next spring! It is such a joy to watch these calves grow and develop, we are proud of the results and love all the great folks we meet along the way.
Our calves are definitely putting on their winter coats!
Welp. That’s a problem. 3 strands of high tensile and they are still back together. Checked fence and found a broken spring gate. Starting over
Some more of tonight’s action...We used Marilyn as the lead cow to lead the calf group up to their new digs, she did great. We applied a dewormer to all the cows and calves (we do this spring and fall- when they go out to pasture and when they come back in) and took out their insecticidal eartags- we don’t want the flies to get immune to them if we leave them in too long! And now it’s back to feeding hay by headlights and headlamps
Tonight we took the next step in the calf weaning process. We removed the Quiet Wean flaps and separated the cows and calves via fence lines. This way the babies and moms can still be nose to nose but not nurse. We gave them some nice hay and grain and hoping for a quiet night.
Happy Farmers Day! Farming for today and for tomorrow too. Thanks Farmers!
