Last month, students at Dayton Avenue Elementary School made a collective commitment to spread kindness throughout their school community and beyond. Students attended a virtual assembly kicking off the month which emphasized the importance of taking care of yourself and others through acts of kindness. They participated in activities all month focused on uplifting their classmates by sharing kind messages. Additionally, students across the building signed a pledge board displayed at the entrance to the school building which reminds them of their promise to spread kindness each day.

Thank you to Doctor Melina Khwaja and LI Urgent Care, our partner for the Eastport-South Manor Staff COVID-19 Vaccination Day. Over 325 of our staff have now received a vaccination. We could not have done it without you!
Mr. Steimel would like to thank all of the Eastport-South Manor school nurses who participated in our district COVID-19 Staff Vaccination Day. On Saturday, Jan. 30, we were able to vaccinate over 325 staff members in the High School gymnasium. With these vaccinations, our district is now in a better position to remain open for the in-person instruction of our students. We would not have been able to accomplish this without our nurses.
Students in Nicole Rau’s first grade class recently participated in a joy-filled holiday sing along which was livestreamed to an excited audience of family and friends.

Second grade students at South Street Elementary School recently completed a science unit exploring magnetism. Students participated in a hands-on science experiment testing various objects to see if they were magnetic or not. First, students made predictions as to if they thought an object was magnetic and then they tested the object using a magnet and recorded their findings. As an extension to the activity, students explored their classroom to find other objects that were magnetic.

Above-and-beyond service and commitment to community is on display at Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School thanks to a project completed by senior J.J. DiMarco. As part of his extensive Eagle Scout project, DiMarco created a comprehensive plan to build and place two picnic tables and seven box gardens in one of the high school courtyards with help from other volunteers from his scout troop. Over the summer, the volunteers assembled the box gardens and added soil, as well as placed the picnic tables for his peers to enjoy. Additionally, DiMarco presented Principal Salvatore Alaimo with a $600 donation to the student activities fund to enhance the experiences of his fellow classmates.
