Is it too late to share what we’re thankful for? It’s a lo-o-o-ong list, including our amazing and inspiring students, our enthusiastic and endlessly adaptable staff, and YOU, or incredible and supportive community members! This also feels like a great opportunity to introduce our two newest Teaching Artists, who we are very grateful to have been able to welcome to the ESScp team in the midst of this wild year. Angela Tornello (seen here with pup Harriet) is a Brooklyn-bas...ed artist and educator with a BFA in painting and printmaking from VCU and an MA in Art History from Brooklyn College. They’ve taught at the Met, the Guggenheim, MoMA, Abrons Art Center, and worked as a drum instructor at Willa Mae Rock Camp NYC! Angela is currently working with our Friday Art After Lunch and Art After School students. Aruni Dharmakirthi is a Sri Lankan-born artist and educator, also based in Brooklyn. They received their MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and have taught here in the city with Studio in a School, Abrons Art Center, and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Aruni is teaching our Wednesday Art After School class and developing curricula for our School Partnership Program. Whew, the mayor is certainly keeping us on our toes this year! Regardless of what happens with DOE schools on Monday, we plan to keep the studio open as we continue enforcing the health and safety measures we developed in September. These include: - A maximum of eight students, two teachers, and one manager are ever in the entire studio at one time. - Masks are required inside the studio at all times; snack and water breaks take place outside on the sidewalk. ... - Students are stationed at individual workspaces and do not share materials. - We keep our door open and air filters on throughout class. - Staff members get tested regularly for everyone’s safety (and peace of mind). Classes are subject to going remote if a student or teacher does get sick, and families are free to switch their registration to a virtual class at any time if you ever become uncomfortable sending your child in person. With all of these measures in place, we are happy to continue welcoming young artists into our space as long as we can. Please reach out to us at any time with questions, concerns, or suggestions! We need investment in the organizations doing long term work in our communities, especially those serving Black girls and girls of color impacted by a racist system that exploits bodies. I’m honored to support @young_women_free, a West Coast organization that supports cis and trans women, girls, and gender non-conforming people, mostly of color, who have been surviving long-term poverty, that have had to navigate the underground street economy for their survival. We MUST take care of each other, especially at a time when the government does not care of us. While the state has money to fund cops in riot gear, endless weapons, and repression - why don’t they have funds to provide real relief to our communities? We need housing, support for survivors, food programs, and healthcare for all! At this time I’m only releasing the numbered edition in a limited batch of 35 prints. Soon I will launch a separate edition soon that will be a higher price point. Since COVID started, @young_women_free has been responding rapidly to meet the needs of our communities and stepping in where the state continues to fail. Since COVID hit they have been distributing emergency funding, purchasing groceries, diapers, and other essential needs as well as distributing chromebooks so people can continue receiving services such as life coaching, vocational training and continuing education. They are also helping folks in the uprisings. Half of the proceeds of the numbered edition will be donated directly to the center so they can continue providing these services to those in our community. Let’s support our beloved girls! Feeling stressed for some reason or another? We recommend closing Twitter and spending a soothing moment with these amazing puppets our K-2 artists are constructing! Make your own with scraps of paper (bonus points if it’s leftover painted paper from some beautiful color mixing experiments), metal fasteners, and a head made out of clay, newspaper, or aluminum foil. If you closed Twitter but then accidentally turned on the news instead, consider constructing a puppet theater with cardboard from the recycling bin and creating a world where voting is easy and encouraged, governments are representative and responsible, and we tackled climate change 15 years ago. Whew, that’s better!
