We at Eclaro are horrified about the senseless shootings of eight people in Atlanta, their lives prematurely ended by unthinkable violence. As six of the victims were Asian women, many in the Asian-American community are feeling particularly vulnerable and distressed especially given the rise of anti-Asian violence during the pandemic. While the investigation into whether the crime was racially motivated continues (though the Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reports that an eyew...itness heard the killer shout, "I am going to kill all Asians!" as he shot victims), this tragedy nonetheless exacerbates the fear that many Asian-Americans have been carrying during the pandemic and beyond. Furthermore, the objectification of women that would lead to such an egregious act is sickening. We at Eclaro grieve and mourn for all those potentially affected the mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and friends of those who were killed. We also remember the broader Asian-American community, acknowledging the fears of the community and especially those most vulnerable, like these women and the elderly.
