We can’t wait to see Karla Knight: Navigator opening October 2921 at the Aldrich! Charting the development of her four-decade career, this will mark Karla Knight’s first solo museum exhibition. Knight's imagery is steeped in science, the occult, early twentieth century abstraction, surrealism and Native American art. And yet, her visual language is purposefully impenetrableshe offers no clues or methods to its decoding. For her, its true meaning must remain unnamed, ...as it is ultimately inspired by ‘the mysteries and absurdities of life.’ As she asserts, ‘It’s not about deciphering the work or the language. It’s about living with the unknown.’ The exhibition will also debut an entirely new body of work, what she refers to as ‘tapestries.’ Using reclaimed cotton cut from c. 194050s seed and grain bags purchased on eBay, Knight sews pieces together to form a patchwork composition. Unstretched, she draws and paints directly onto the surface with flashe, colored pencil and graphite, while hand embroidering select sections. The grounds exhibit signs of staining and mending, visual markers left from their previous life-use. Read the full press release: https://thealdrich.org/exhibitions/karla-knight-navigator . To create his otherworldly paintings, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein used what was available to him. A paintbrush made from drinking straws and his wife Marie’s hair; baker’s tools and Masonite from work; and most often, he simply applied pigment directly on the canvas and used his fingers to create astonishingly unusual spatial illusions. . This work is on view alongside 11 other paintings in Eugene Von Bruenchenhein: Phantasmagorical Paintings 1957-61, on view thru Jan 23rd. .... . . #eugenevonbruenchenhein #cosmicconsciousness #atomicage #outsiderart #selftaughtart See more

Mario del Curto (b. 1955, Switzerland) has been taking photographs of the work of art brut makers for more than twenty years. In his travels, he has entered the intimate worlds of the important figures of art brut in Europe and the United States, and he has produced extraordinary visual accounts of these encounters. Here is his photograph of work by Pearl Fryar. Read @rawvisionmagazine post today about Fryar below. Pear Fryar (b. 1940) started making his #Topiary Garde...n in 1984 in a successful bid to win a prestigious local competition. He taught himself to prune and shape the trees and shrubs he had planted in his three-acre garden, using a petrol-driven hedge trimmer and starting with a few plants. Working from his imagination, #Fryar coaxed over 100 specimens of more than 20 different trees and plants, including holly, yew and juniper, into fantastic shapes: hearts, animals and abstract forms. The new downloadable PDF version of the #ArtEnvironments section of our #OutsiderArt Sourcebook features 60 spectacular #visionary environments from around the world.
