Ready for Spring thanks to the CLEREL research team! Dan Sprague, Ted Taft, Andy Joy, Madonna Martin, and Scott Ebert.
Pruning season is coming to an end. It’s time to manage the canopy. We are working to help shoot thinning / desuckering become easier for the growers to manage ...mechanically. As sensor technology is becoming more advanced, we are pushing the process of utilizing automation to balance the crop load to a targeted yield. Test trials will take place over the next few months to incorporate robotic technology in order to achieve maximum efficiency with the 2 row unit. Stay tuned! See more

Grape yield and Brix mapping during Concord harvest.
Ground-based sensors, drones, and satellites...developing new tools for spatially measuring and managing vineyard nutrition. Big thank you to the RIT engineering team for returning to CLEREL this weekend to scan research vineyards.
We are back at it - researching Concord grapevine nutrition, but this time with a precision viticulture twist. These photos were taken on 9/2/2020 in a one-acre Concord block at CLEREL where we are inducing nutrient deficiencies with soil amendments. Our goal, working with engineers and new technology, is to develop sensors to detect nutrient deficiencies before they occur.
The RIT Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing team was at CLEREL today scanning Concord vineyards. This is the start of some new cooperative research to measure and manage vine mineral nutrients.
Awesome to see this technology developed in EV project reach commercial vineyards. https://www.goodfruit.com/seeing-a-future-for-crop-estimat/
Variable-rate Mechanical shoot thinning in CA again this year...this time the Cornell team helped VMech remotely from NY.
Concord pic of the day: I am often asked why my research program puts so much effort into Concord grape production. Here is why. Concord is a major player in bo...th juice and wine production in NY and PA. Don't get me wrong, I like conducting research on other wine grapes like Riesling and Traminette but let's be serious about what pays the bills around here. Name another grape variety...which we can grow in the Northeast...that can be eaten as a table grape, enjoyed as a juice, tasted as a wine, slapped on a PB&J, and made into a pie? See more
None of us in the Concord grape industry want a damaging freeze event but what happens to plant tissue when it does get cold? Why don't shoots freeze at 32 degrees F and why do sprinklers protect plant tissues? Here is an explanation from back in 2012 when it did get too cold for some vineyards. https://efficientvineyard.com//dehydration-kills-during-a-
