Although Nouveau has garnered a very negative reputation over the years due to many low quality mass-produced mass-marketed wines, you can rest assured that this all natural, small production Gamay from Karim Vionnet delivers on everything desired from this style! "Sex, Rock and Gamay" Karim Vionnet exudes an unapologetic, forthright, carefree spirit which manifests itself in various ways, including his wine. A path has been lined with luminaries of the French winemaking world; working for Jean Foillard and training under Guy Breton, Karim was granted a rare opportunity to farm a vineyard parcel owned by Jules Chauvet, father of the French natural wine movement. Karim was raised in Morgon, having been adopted by Marie and Josef Vionnet as a baby (he laughingly acknowledges the biblical parallel). He is of North African descent, a fact of little consequence locally; but it was a complicating factor when he started his winery because he was advised that use of his ethnic first name on labels would limit sales. He initially capitulated but quickly embraced his full identity and reverted to Karim. Karim’s vineyards are all bush vines. He prunes by hand because he loves clipping but relies on a tractor for turning soil and spraying on organic treatments. Karim utilizes full carbonic maceration in fermentation. And he does not use oak barrels on any of his wines except for his Fleurie and Chiroubles @domaine_karimvionnet

A blend of Pinot Noir, Grenache and a touch of Rousanne, the is very expressive with generous red fruit aromas while the palate is light and bewitching with slight raspberry hints, a smooth light body, good intensity, and long length! Situated in Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, Domaine de la Mongestine is a young estate pursuing organic viticulture with biod...ynamic principles. This is a real rarity in their region that is known for mass produced rose. However, new owners Harry and Celine Gozlan envision a project focused on farming with great care and making wines simply. Their 31 planted hectares are mainly on the clay and limestone soils of North facing slopes which rise up to 450 meters making them some of the highest in the appellation. These qualities ensure a longer maturation process to preserve freshness in the fruit and acidity. The estate was certified organic in 2014 and is now undergoing the process of transition to biodynamic viticulture as well. Producing their wines with minimal intervention, none of the cuvees see sulfur until bottling. Native yeast fermentations allow the estate to showcase the different terroirs of their estate. They avoid barrel aging in their winemaking preferring inert tanks and amphora, which allows for micro-oxygenation but does not obscure their terroir.
