We thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Carl E. Heastie, all members of the NYS Legislature, and especially our long-time champions Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes, NYS Assemblywoman, Assemblymember Monica Wallace Tim Kennedy for Senate, Sean M. Ryan, Assemblywoman Karen McMahon, Finance and Ways and Means Chairs Krueger and Weinstein, Housing Chairs Kavanagh and Cymbrowitz, Judiciary Chairs Hoylman and Lavine, Codes Chairs Bailey and Dinowitz, Senator Myrie and As...semblymember Solages for championing stable funding for three years for the NYS Office of the Attorney General’s Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) in the FY2022 budget. The State's multi-year investment of $20 million per year in HOPP will fund 88 nonprofit housing counseling and legal services providers helping New York homeowners navigate pandemic-related moratoriums and complex forbearance programs in every county of the state. HOPP is a critical lifeline to preventing foreclosures for thousands of New York homeowners, and helping homeowners transition to affordable housing. HOPP will also ensure homeowners access financial relief through funding allocated to NYS Homes and Community Renewal, also thanks to Governor Cuomo and the NYS Legislature in this year’s budget. After a year of rampant loss, this is another giant step in New York’s long road to recovery. To get assistance from a HOPP legal services or housing counseling organization near you, call (855) HOME-456 or visit homeownerhelpny.com.

https://elderjusticeny.org/stay-hopeful/ A Statement from Center for Elder Law & Justice CEO, Karen Nicolson, Esq. I join all Americans in our condemnation of the insurgency against the Capitol on January 6th. I watched in disbelief as I saw the images of armed rioters breaking windows, invading the building and endangering the lives our elected representatives and others. As many have said already, these were not peaceful protestors; they were domestic terrorists. If you tol...d me when I was a young law student in the late 1980’s that this could happen in American, I would not have believed you. My heart breaks for our country. This did not occur in a vacuum. For many years, there have been individuals fanning the flames of violence, attacking our free press and creating an alternative reality. Those that encouraged this violence must be held just as accountable for it as those that participated in-person. We cannot allow those politicians (many of whom also are lawyers) to whitewash what they have done that led us here. Please never forget the images you saw over the last 24 hours. Despite my sadness, I am hopeful after hearing soon-to-be Attorney General Merrick Garland yesterday. In the words of our President-Elect, This team will move us closer to the American ideal of Equal Justice under the Law. They will work to restore independence of the Justice Department, always follow facts and the law, and serve the American people with integrity. Better days are ahead, my friends. Stay hopeful. Karen

CELJ and advocates from across the state wrote a letter to NYSDOH - New York State Health Department Commissioner Howard Zucker requesting that nursing home discharge appeal hearing decisions be made available to the public in a searchable online database. "Many nursing homes that have succeeded in limiting the number of Covid-infected residents in Western New York focus on intense training, work hard to keep a stable, well-supplied workforce, and share the true extent of coronavirus-related challenges on their campuses."
