Very interesting approach on using immune checkpoint inhibition as a treatment for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Keytruda (pembrolizumab) demonstrated efficacy in improving or stabilizing PML, lowering JC viral load, and enhancing anti-JC virus CD4 and CD8 T-cell activity. This is good news for patients who receive potent immunosuppresive or immunomodulatory therapies (eg, Tysabri for multiple sclerosis) and are at risk for PML.
