We know that the vaccine makes symptomatic disease less likely, reducing the risk of hospitalization and death, but we still don’t know if it prevents infection in the first place or prevents spreading the virus to others. Precautions must remain in place until enough people receive the vaccine and are protected from severe or fatal illness from COVID-19. #spreadfactsnotCOVID19

When a virus infects a person’s cells and reproduces, it can change and become a new variant of that virus. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been documented in the United States and globally during this pandemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Masking and physical distancing limits the spread of the virus and gives it fewer chances to change and become a more infectious or deadly variant. #spreadfactsnotCOVID19

Yes. Every time the virus that causes COVID-19 infects a new person, there are more chances for a mutation, which may reduce the efficacy of current vaccines. Masking and physical distancing gives the virus fewer chances to change and become a more infectious or deadly variant. #spreadfactsnotCOVID19

None of the COVID-19 vaccines currently in development in the United States use the live virus that causes COVID-19. This means you can’t get COVID-19 from the vaccine. The goal of each of the vaccines in development is to teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19. For Dr. David Markowitz, 2020 has redefined the term, essential workers" and given him a greater appreciation for everyone on the front lines of the pandemic. "The health care professionals I work with every day, who have always given more at a moment’s notice than they could ever get in return, have been elevated to a new level. Every member of our team, from providers to administration to environmental services, plays a critical roll to ensure patient safety all while adhe...ring to strict infection control measures to protect our patients, families, and communities. The first responders who get called at all hours of the day and night respond to unknown dangers without hesitation. The department of public works personnel who keep everything running. And all the other essential workers we depend on daily. We are so fortunate to be able to depend on essential workers during this time." Dr. Markowitz is looking forward to 2021 and is hopeful that he will be able to once again spend time with friends and family. Learn more about Dr. Markowitz: https://www.ech.org/Blog/Detail/27

With 2021 on the horizon, our team is reflecting back on 2020. Here’s what Melissa Stoddard, environmental services team leader, will remember from this challenging year: When COVID first started, I was very nervous. I was constantly asking myself, ‘Am I safe enough in this room? Do I have enough PPE on? We worked closely with our nursing unit to brainstorm and problem-solve. As I look back I’m grateful for our team’s ability and willingness to jump into new thinking and new processes. Now it’s a matter of gearing up, having confidence in the PPE, and understanding that these patients are not any different than other patients. Our presence with the additional cleaning gives these patients another opportunity to interact with people. They are isolated, and I feel good knowing we can support them in our own way.
