Can we talk about teething and what some pediatricians are mistaking for ear infections for a minute? A common misconception when it comes babies or toddle...rs is that they frequently get ear infections. Don't get us wrong, that may be the case in a small percentage of toddlers and young children (and if it is, get them to a pediatric chiropractor STAT). But that scenario actually happens far less frequently than you think. Here are the bonafide signs that your baby is DEFINITELY teething but might get confused with an ear infection: Fever: Fevers with teething is very common. The immune system is priming the body for new invaders to possibly enter into the system and they want to be on the defense. Baby pulling on his or her ears: Babies are innately smart, they instinctively pull on their ears to help to fascial connections around the jaw. Fussy Baby: Yeah, you'd be irritable, too, if your mouth hurt. Pediatrician peeks in their ear and says "Yep, I see inflammation in there!": Of course there is inflammation. They are getting ready to have additional holes in their mouth and swelling is a typical immune response. The number one thing doctors prescribe in our area for ear infections: ANTIBIOTICS. When absolutely necessary, the benefits outweigh the risks. But when baby has been working their whole lives to build up their natural bacterial flora and we send in an artificial substance to wipe it all out when they are TEETHING, it defeats the purpose and works against the overall functioning of their immune systems. First Visit Postpartum. The postpartum period is a very unserved time in a persons life. The average number of prenatal visits is 12, newborn visits is 6 ...and postpartum visits.... 1. Yes. Just one, at about 6 weeks. In 2018 ACOG changed its recommendations stating that Postpartum care be on going and start at about 3 weeks. The tricky part is that it takes on average 10 years for recommendations to be implemented. The 4th trimester can be a very vulnerable and isolating time for a family. It is full of many transitions, physically, mentally, emotionally & socially.
