Students at Elmcrest’s elementary, middle school, and high school were honored this past week for their scholastic achievements. In a virtual ceremony, 18 boys and girls were recognized for attaining honor roll and 14 were acknowledged for merit roll designations. In addition to being credited for their academic excellence, these children represent the values taught at Elmcrest; perseverance, responsibility, self-control, and optimism. Despite COVID limitations that prevented a school assembly, this ceremony was telecast to all the residences. Debra Mastropaolo, principal at Elmcrest’s campus school, thanked the students for their hard work as well as being flexible during these difficult times. Honorees received their certificates followed by a pizza party and sweet cupcakes.

Snow Show! When the snow piled up, the boys and girls at Elmcrest found it perfect packing for a snowman contest. Or maybe a snow woman? They took up the challenge and created some clever wintry characters. Cold weather didn’t freeze the creative inspiration of these children. Four finalists emerged from the snowy ground and the winners were declared. Everyone voted for their favorite and Nurse Brad Snowman took first place honors. The children in Cottage 7 were the talented ...creators. Second place went to Cottage 9 for the CDC- compliant Snow Woman, faithfully wearing her mask. Robo Snowman could use a battery charge, and voila! Finally, the traditional, Basic Snowman rounded out the contest. Winners warmed up with a pizza party to enjoy their victory.

Last March, many essential workers found themselves in need of childcare when the pandemic forced schools and centers to close. This increased worries for families whose children have severe developmental disabilities and complex medical issues. Casey’s Place relieved many parents of these concerns. For three months, the staff at Casey’s Place cared for the children of essential workers each week in eight to ten hour days. These parents were able to fulfill their responsibilities, assured that their children were in excellent, professional care. Five-year-old, Braedan’s mom, Raegan, is a federal agent. Having her son cared for during these months meant everything. She expresses her gratitude, They say it takes a villagewell Casey’s Place is our village. Every note I write to the staff says, we are forever grateful.

Everyone at Elmcrest is excited to support our first Youth Council. Representatives from each cottage have been chosen to be youth leaders. The Youth Council will meet with the Director of Model Fidelity once a month to support events happening throughout campus, volunteer, and learn specific leadership skills. This is an exciting opportunity for students to build leadership skills, engage in volunteering, and build their personal resumes. We congratulate those students who were selected to represent their cottages and role model great leaders.
