We are recognizing #AutismAcceptanceMonth by offering perspectives from our educators who are studying the @pineprogram1 - a Program for Inclusion & Neurodiversity Education. Thank you for sharing your valuable perspective, Ms. Vicki! #neurodiversity #inclusion #PinePromise

In Partnership with the Program for Inclusion and Neurodiversity Education @PineProgram from NYU, the Elmira City School District will be recognizing and celebrating Neurodiversity and Autism Acceptance Month this month. The concept of neurodiversity means that brain differences are just that: differences and they are normal. So a disability such as autism isn’t abnormal. It is simply a variation of the human brain. For autistic students, with learning and thinking differ...ences, the idea of neurodiversity has real benefits. It can help kids (and their parents) frame their challenges as differences, rather than as deficits. It can also shed light on instructional approaches that might help to highlight particular strengths kids have. Our staff is taking PINE courses to learn more about this important topic. We are pleased to highlight their perspectives throughout April. Thank you to Che Paulman, Speech Pathologist of Fassett Elementary School, for offering her perspective. #GoExpress

Our Hope Squad is sending love. Watch the video below for lovely reminders of hope. The Elmira City School District is proud to be the first New York State school to introduce Utah-based "Hope Squads" into our schools. Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. Hope Squad members are nominated by their classmates as trustworthy peers and trained by advisors. The program reduces youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention. ... We continue to be inspired by our empathetic and kind youth. #GoExpress https://youtu.be/IzosRuzMFfc

All 4th graders in the District are following the NYS Modules. These modules started with the Haudenosaunee in the fall and follow with the establishment of colonial cities in New Netherland and the establishment of NY as a state. In addition to introducing students to Twain as an important member of Elmira’s history, his lifetime spans many critical historical events in our country. As students follow Twain’s life experiences, they are introduced to America’s struggle with ...slavery, the Civil War, the Age of Invention and The Gilded Age. He is a perfect bridge to our next module, focusing on Women’s Suffrage. Thank you to WENY TV News for supplying the New York Times Best Selling book, Who Was Mark Twain? to every fourth grade classroom in the District. And for the support of the Mark Twain Studies program at Elmira College for their continuing support of our students and staff. We love connecting important literature to curriculum and especially enthused to teach local Elmira history. #GoExpress

Look at us, making art here, there and everywhere! As we transition to 100% remote learning today for the next couple weeks, Mrs. Romeo, art teacher at Beecher Elementary brings us inspiration! She shared this photo of a wall that showcases some of the student artwork that has been submitted virtually since the beginning of the school year! In a year of uncertainty, we thank our students for sharing their inspirational work with us! Great job, Beecher artists! Elmira Expre...ss has AN ATTITUDE OF FORTITUDE! #GoExpress

The show must go on! This weekend, our Express Marching Band would have been on the road to Corning's annual Bandtoberfest Band Show. But in Covid-style, the show went on virtually! All bands that normally attend the show were encouraged to send in a video of what their band is doing through COVID. The Express Marching Bandits put together a montage of their time together in the last year! Click below to watch the entire online stream of Elmira Express montage arranged for ...Bandtoberfest!" Thank you for putting this together, CPP Schools! #GoExpress https://youtu.be/yCnwhukJVto

"Sometimes, bad things happen in the world. But right now, I am fine." We are pleased to begin sharing examples of FORTITUDE happening across our strong city of Elmira. #anattitudeoffortitude Today, this is an important lesson brought to us by Mrs. Pryslak, a pre-kindergarten teacher of Pine City Elementary. After the recent news in our county regarding COVID-19, Mrs. Pryslak turned to what she knows best - and that is to remain positive even in hard times and to teach others... to do the same thing. Like most educators today, Mrs. Pryslak feels compelled to bring lessons of hope and fortitude to our young learners. But this is a lesson for grown-ups, too. "It makes me feel super happy to have helped some people! I know it's a kid's book, but it helps adults too!," says Mrs. Pryslak. Listen in on Mrs. Pryslak's read-aloud of the book, "Right Now, I am Fine," by Dr. Daniela Owen. This book is a mindfully written story to help children deal with stress and anxiety by uncovering their emotions and following a simple calming routine. Thank you for the reminder, Mrs. Pryslak! Today is Unity Day! Unity Day is a day to show that we are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We asked our staff and students to wear orange during their zoom meetings today and to help encourage the dialogue of standing together, being kind, and accepting others. The elementary School Counselors made a picture to promote Unity Day! Where are your orange Unity pictures, friends? Post your orange picture down below in comments!
