As a follow up to my first Covid post today, here is a snippet of another article, discussing the new Variation of Covid 19 with a higher transmission rate. There are many factors here at play, and we must remain vigilant in our fight to keep up with universal precautions such as mask wearing, distancing, etc, because all the facts are not in. There are no guarantees that vaccines will be effective on the "new" variant, so we cannot let our guard down.. Scientists are mon...itoring a coronavirus mutation that could affect the strength of vaccines ReprintsBy Andrew Joseph @DrewQJoseph January 7, 2021 As scientists try to track the spread of a new, more infectious coronavirus variant around the world finding more cases in the United States and elsewhere this week they are also keeping an eye on a different mutation with potentially greater implications for how well Covid-19 vaccines work. The mutation, identified in a variant first seen in South Africa and separately seen in another variant in Brazil, changes a part of the virus that your immune system’s antibodies get trained to recognize after you’ve been infected or vaccinated. Lab studies show that the change could make people’s antibodies less effective at neutralizing the virus. The mutation seems to help the virus disguise part of its signature appearance, so the pathogen might have an easier time slipping past immune protection. See more

Covid-19 immunity likely lasts for years A new study shows immune cells primed to fight the coronavirus should persist for a long time after someone is vaccinated or recovers from infection. by Neel V. Patel archive page January 6, 2021... covid-19 electron microscopeNIH Covid-19 patients who recovered from the disease still have robust immunity from the coronavirus eight months after infection, according to a new study. The result is an encouraging sign that the authors interpret to mean immunity to the virus probably lasts for many years, and it should alleviate fears that the covid-19 vaccine would require repeated booster shots to protect against the disease and finally get the pandemic under control. A new research study popped up in my Medscape feed this morning, and i wanted to share it with you. It suggests that some people that have had Covid or have been vaccinated for it, should have long lasting immunity. I rarely put a lot of faith in a single research study, and this is a small study, with a lot of variables, so lets just hope that this initial report is accurate. It is premature to make any widespread assumptions for many reasons. Fingers crossed, prayers this it encouraging news.... Dr. David Ribakove See more

This is a brand new article that dropped on Medscape. It is exciting news for treatment of depression and anxiety disorders without the use of medication. Medscape Medical News Supplement Plus Probiotic May Improve Depressive Symptoms... Batya Swift Yasgur, MA, LSW August 12, 2020 A combination of the supplement S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) HEAL9 may rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, new research suggests. A team of Italian investigators randomly assigned 90 patients with subthreshold or mild-to-moderate depression to receive either SAMe plus L. plantarum HEAL9 or placebo for 6 weeks and found significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and cognitive symptoms as early as 2 weeks following treatment initiation. "The effect of this novel product is independent from the severity of the symptoms, unlike traditional antidepressants available on the market that have minimal benefits for subthreshold or mild-to-moderate symptoms," write the investigators, led by Alberto Saccarello, MD, a physician in private practice in Genova, Italy. The findings were published online recently in Primary Care Companion CNS Disorders

I wanted to bring people up to speed with our current office situation. Patients we are seeing universally discuss with us what is happening in their world regarding the pandemic. People are stressed and confused. Many are anxious how it is affecting themselves and their loved ones. Even before the covid crisis, we always spoke with and discussed important issues with our patients. It is especially important to alleviate patient's fears regarding many healthcare topics, ...and this one is so widespread, people have questions and we have answers. I dont believe any visit has passed where we did not discuss Covid 19. Our in office policies have worked well. Everyone is universally observing the mask rule in the facility. We are spending lots of time sanitizing the facility before we open, and cleaning after each and every patient visit. We continue to restrict patients, and attempt to not have them in the waiting room at all if we can help it. We sanitize after each and every patient encounter, and handwash after each and every patient encounter. I think we have done a good job accommodating patient need. We continue to have availability for new and emergent patient visits Monday thru Thursday. We were getting burned out due to the stress of all of our patients needs on a daily basis, so like we have done for several years, we are now closed on Fridays to get some very important down time with our family. Both of our kids are scheduled to go to college in the next few weeks, and we personally recently lost our dog, and have adopted a new puppy. For our own mental health's sake, we are doing just what everyone else is doing, trying to enjoy our lives safely to the best of our ability, modifying our recreational and "vacational" activities inside a pandemic. Like everyone else, we have had to make significant changes to what we do, because we are just like everybody else. We have been happy to see that most medical facilities have re-opened, as it has allowed us to refer out patients and receive patient referrals in the local medical community. We have enjoyed some significant and interesting clinical success as of late, especially to some extent that we were "the only game in town" and had to get people better, especially considering there was no one else to send them to. It is this amazing sense of accomplishment and patient appreciation that reassures us to the fact that we have been and remain essential, effective and appreciated by the local patient community. We are blessed to continue to provide what we hope to be the most effective and safe chiropractic care possible to our local community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any healthcare needs at 716-877-5800

In the last few months, Dr. Tina and I have spent a lot of time focusing on research articles on Medscape, the CDC website, and the NYS department of health regarding Covid 19. While our office was never completely closed, we instituted many policies and procedures aligned with the above recommended sites. Many of our modifications include continual sanitation protocols in and around our facility with hospital grade anti-viral / antibacterial spray, Doctors and patients wea...ring masks, significant signage displayed at entrances and in and around the office, Continual Covid risk management including taking patient temperatures, using O2 pulse oximeters, hand washing before and after each patient, scheduling each patient in half hour intervals, limiting or eliminating patients crossing in the office, and not inviting other guests other than our patients into the office. The workflow document we have created is staggering. Our entire operation has been completely modified. These are tedious times, but our procedures are based on best practice, best efforts to keep everyone safe, happy and protected. I want to welcome you to the office. If you somehow cannot be served by your Chiropractor because they are not open or are not abiding by these new sanitation rules, we would be pleased to serve you even if you plan to return to them in the future. It is quite alright for us to do this and we would be happy to respect your wishes during this time of need. We will be happy to refer you back to your other healthcare providers as well.

Hello everyone, I wanted to take a moment to post something. Since covid 19 has been on the scene, Medscape and all my feeds are flooded with information that seems to change hourly if not daily. As i am afraid to post things that may not remain current, I wanted to keep you posted with updates. The office tentatively remains open. We are discussing our next move. We plan to handle emergencies and urgent visits, regardless. We have pretty much taken high risk patients ...off the schedule and respect the wishes to pause care for those patients that wish to be off the schedule. We have stepped up sanitation and disinfection processes, however it appears that there may be no totally effective procedure to address this, other than screening and precautions, and these are flawed measures at best. As you, I share a heavy heart regarding what is certainly coming our way in the days and weeks ahead. You may always feel free to leave a voice mail, an email or fb message. This is truly an unprecedented time. As more is known, with more reliable information, I will do my best to share it with you. Dr. Ribakove See more

Playing table tennis, also known as ping-pong, appears to improve motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), new research suggests. The results of a small pilot study show that table ping-pong is a safe and effective rehabilitative intervention for patients with PD that can be easily introduced, study investigator Shinsuke Fujioka, MD, Department of Neurology, Fukuoka University, Japan, told Medscape Medical News. He emphasized that any rehabilitation for patients with PD could be beneficial, especially during the early stages of their illness. "The most important thing is that patients have fun when doing rehabilitation."

(Reuters Health) - A combination of horseback riding and brain-building activities may help improve motor skills in children with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism-spectrum disorders and ADHD, a small study suggests. The combination of approaches over several months appeared to produce measurable improvements in dexterity, coordination and strength, researchers report in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and many parents noted their child showed behavioral improvements as well. "outside of traditional gross and fine motor skills, behavioral and academic improvements may be observed by incorporating brain-building tasks before or after a child has participated in equine-assisted activities."

Eating a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) for just 1 year improved diversity in the gut microbiome of elderly participants and was associated with reduced frailty and better health, according to the results of a randomized multicenter study published online February 17 in the journal Gut. "[A]dherence to the MedDiet modulates specific components of the gut microbiota that were associated with a reduction in risk of frailty, improved cognitive function, and reduced inflammatory status. Existing research has found that changes in the gut microbiome can have a significant impact in areas such as coronary heart disease, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease.
