Playing with Math: Last week at Morning Reports, Mathematics Instructor Alexandra Schmidt shared how her students are creatively using math outside the classroom and collaborating with other area students. Ms. Schmidt and a five student team (Caroline A. ’21, Lillian L. ’22, Irene N. ’21, Coco W. ’21, and Gabby Z. ’22) plus an alternate (Grace P. ’22) competed in the Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge (M3). Known as Team 14847, they earned an honorable mention at M3, placing ...in the top 9% of the 535 papers submitted in the US and UK. The team’s performance also earned each member scholarship funds for college. Congratulations to Ms. Schmidt and our Emma students on a strong showing this year! During our Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, History Instructor and Archivist Nancy Iannucci shared "some of our school’s remarkable connections with the Civil Rights movement." One of those connections is the speaker for Emma Willard School's 159th Commencement exercises in June 1973: the nation's first Black Congresswoman, and 1972 Presidential candidate, Rep. Shirley Chisholm. First elected in 1968 to represent New York's 12th congressional district, she served for seven terms from 1969-1983. Her commencement speech to the class of 1973 was titled "Options and Opportunities for Educated Women in the United States Today". The June 10, 1973 edition of the clock ran her speech in full. Happy National Women and Girls in Sports Day! Today marks the annual observance acknowledging and recognizing the accomplishments of female athletes, sports participation for women and girls, and the progress and continuing struggle towards equality for women in sports. Though our athletics program this year has been quite different, we recognize that this year has still seen many firsts for women in sports, and our athletics community has been working hard to help us stay active. We're sharing some photos of #EmmaWillardSchool students in sports from the distant and more recent past to celebrate #NGWSD!
