Three minutes before the Apollo 11 lunar lander Eagle reached the moon’s surface, computer alarms went off. But Margaret Hamilton had anticipated the problem an...d created software to solve it. Hamilton didn’t just land a man on the moon, she created the building blocks for modern software engineering. And she did it as a working mom with a little one in tow. As a working mother in the 1960s, Margaret Hamilton was unusual; but as a spaceship programmer, she was positively radical. Just wow! See more

This Independence Day 2020, we are all reflecting perhaps more than ever before on the significance of our national symbols, our imperfections, and our past, pr...esent, and future. The short movie scene linked here has had a profound impact on my life almost from its beginning. It was one of the first times I ever heard our National Anthem, having come out in 1970 (I was 4 at the time though probably saw it when it came out on TV a year or so later). It had such a huge impression on me that the image of the flag on the ship's fantail enters my head nearly every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner. I will always stand for our National Anthem and respect our flag, because the men standing at attention on the battleship "Nevada" (BB-36) that morning did the same, with the bombs literally bursting in air around them (the movie accurately depicts what took place - coincidentally the attack started just as morning colors were being hoisted on the ships and at military bases on Oahu). With everything that was going on around them at that moment, it was still that important. Being a career civilian who has benefited from the sacrifices of our military, including many members of my own family, I feel I can do no less. It's worth noting also that July 4, 1776 was near the beginning of the Revolutionary War, not it's end. I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and happy 4th of July, but let's remember that it's also Independence Day, which commemorates the beginning of our national quest for Freedom 244 years ago. A quest which continues to this day. I pray that someday all of America's citizens will truly feel that they are united as "one nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all." For those interested in finding out more about this movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor and it's background, the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in #Glenville is a good place to start. It has a model of the flagship, "Akagi" that was used in the movie which was featured in the international TV series, "Fireball Run" in its 2016 visit to our region. (Checking in at the Museum virtually this morning).
