Did you know there's a new dance in Troy called "Do The Census"? Wait What??? Get a load of Robby's moves! He brings it down with a serious messages about making sure everyone counts, for funding, infrastructure, safety and to ensure our county retains is "metropolitan" status. CARE PACKAGE FROM TROY NY TO TROY, KANSAS Troy NY Pays Back Farmer's N95 Viral Mask Donation Remember the Kansas farmer who sent a single N95 mask to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just to make sure we could at least help one person? That farmer, Dennis Ruhnke, was from Troy... Kansas! ... Last month, The Enjoy Troy Co. teamed up with Troy New York Mayor Patrick Madden and our friends at Darn Good Yarn in Halfmoon, to send two very special care packages to Troy, Kansas as a way of paying back Dennis' gift and also to keep paying it forward. Not only did we send some great "enjoy troy." hats and stickers to our sister Troy, but we also sent the Mayor of Troy Kansas some surgical and N95 masks to distribute, courtesy of Darn Good Yarn. On top of that, we informed them that Darn Good Yarn was inspired by Dennis' humble gift to donate 30,000 masks to those in need across the country. So that gift of one mask to New York, back in April, became 30,000 across the U.S. this summer. Just goes to show you, there is really no act of kindness too small. TROY TEEN TO TROY NY: BE COUNTED IN 2020 CENSUS (& WHY) Congratulations to 13-year-old Nicholas Bufi of Troy for making the winning video in a contest to get the word out about the 2020 U.S. Census to Rensselaer County residents.... The message that I hope all people will take away from the video is that your voice matters and every person counts, said contest winner Nicholas Bufi, 13. Before I started the project, I didn't know too much about the census, but I made it my goal to know a lot more about it and to make a video that was educational and that told people why they should take the census. This May, The Arts Center of the Capital Region and Rensselaer County Complete County Committee (YouCount) invited teen creators in Rensselaer County, ages 13 to 19, to make short engaging videos promoting the importance of being counted 2020 U.S. Census, which will determine how more than $675 billion federal dollars are distributed to communities across the country. The contest was developed by The Arts Center to help engage middle and high school students who were learning remotely due to COVID-19 school closures. Contestants were encouraged to collaborate using video technology readily available in smartphones and other mobile or video devices. Bufi, who will start the ninth grade at Troy High School this fall, received a $1,000 cash prize for his video, which stresses the ways the US Census could impact Rensselaer County, like providing funding for schools, hospitals and roads. In the video, he narrates over footage he filmed from his mother’s car of public places in Rensselaer County, including local schools, highways, the Troy Police Department and Samaritan Hospital. He uses text on the screen to emphasize important points about the census, like "The fewer people that take it the less money we get back." The census also determines the number of representatives to which each state is entitled in the U.S. House of Representatives. HOW TO TAKE THE CENSUS NOW The 2020 Census is happening now. The public is asked to complete your questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail. ENJOY TROYLET PAPER CAKE Turning Crisis into Cake When our friend, Troy Confectioner Sweet Sues woke up this morning, she croaked: "Time to make the Troylet paper." :) ... Order online: https://copper-pot.square.site Hey, these are scary times but laughter is still good medicine. The local restaurant industry was hit pretty hard by this crisis and we love to see plucky little businesses in Troy adapt and pivot to the times. We're still waiting for a sugary retort from our neighboring Albany bakers... where, after all, perforated toilet paper on a roll was first patented! Look it up (or view the Albany Institute of History & Art's virtual exhibit online).

NEW: ENJOY TROY DAY VIDEO 2020 Any Old Shoe Will Do, And Oh So Many Crows! In anticipation of our annual celebration to start the New Year in Troy, this year on Enjoy Troy Day (eve), Enjoy Troy Co. writer-in-residence, Duncan Crary and his team of mirth makers has created a new custom out-of-old. Have a watch and join us this Sunday Jan. 5, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Footsy Magoo's, 17 First St. in Downtown Troy. ... MODERN MYTH OF TROY A Small American City There is a small American City way up the Hudson River that was not always named Troy. Before it had this name it had another and another. Until one night, many years ago, when on the evening of January the Fifth, the people of this place met at a tavern as they often did and still do today and decided upon a new name, but yet a very old name from far far away. And on that eve and on the evening of every January the fifth from that day on, anyone living in this place who leaves a shoe outside their door, any old shoe will do, will find it full of most wondrous tchotchkes and coins as they awake the next morning. These gifts are left by The Forest Folk, who come in many guises and have many names around the world, in places new and old. In this place, now known as Troy, they come down from the hills, followed closely by the crows. And who can forget the crows? Oh so many crows! So long as the people continue to gather in taverns and agree to the name, this place shall forever be known as TROY and any shoes ‘twas left out the night before will be filled with bounty to enjoy in Troy on January the Sixth. [Please note: The Forest Folk fill shoes in exactly the same manner as your stockings are filled by Santa, also a native of Troy, NY.] CREDITS: Story by Duncan Crary Narration by Steve Ridler CAST Emily Menn - Forest Folk 1 Neil Wahab - Forest Folk 2 Anasha Cummings - Forest Folk 3 CREW Costumes by Emily Menn, Golden Bough Design Photography by Erin Pihlaja Video Editing by Anasha Cummings, ACDC Static

INSPIRING TECH WITH TROY, NY CONNECTION Dave Whalen, 56, of Scotia, N.Y. has been paralyzed from the neck down since a ski accident at age 18 but that can’t stop him from making music. He and his friend Mike DiCesare invented and developed the Jamboxx, a musical device he created to overcome his disability.... You can often find the Jamboxx team at Troy's Tech Valley Center of Gravity (TVCOG), where they sometimes assemble Jamboxx devices with the help of other TVCOG members. Here's Dave playing the National Anthem at the Times Union Center before the Albany Empire arena football game last night. (P.S. Two Buttons Deep, the media outlet that produced this video is also Troy-based! ) https://www.facebook.com/TwoButtonsDeep/videos/2041717009428584/

ABOUT THE ENJOY TROY COMPANY The official online store of the Enjoy Troy Company, offering stickers, t-shirts, mugs, hats, plaques and other "enjoy troy." products. Description... HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY, WILLIAM KENNEDY (It says "Albany, N.Y. 1938," but that's Troy, 1987) Today is the 90th birthday of author William Kennedy, who is known to enjoy Troy on the regular. ... To celebrate the occasion, here's a movie still from the beginning of the 1987 feature film, Ironweed, based on Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. It says "Albany, N.Y. 1938," but that's really River Street in Troy, 1987. (We weren't at the premiere at The Palace Theatre in Albany, but we've been told there were some "That's not Albany, that's Troy!" grumbles in the audience when this title card first flashed on the screen... The centuries-old rivalry between these two small American cities is alive and well!) We wish Mr. Kennedy a very happy birthday! And many more. RECAP: ENJOY TROY DAY 2018 Taverngoers decide to 'keep' Troy's name Thank you to all who attended our Enjoy Troy Day Ceremony & Party at River Street Pub yesterday, and thanks to all who enjoyed Troy in your own way. ... What a wonderful group of "taverngoers" full of mirth, conviviality and warmth on a frigid winter's day. The music by Kenny & Lori of Super 400 fame was beautiful. And the food...!!! Vince Pellicano might serve the best Beef on Weck east of Rochester! And those chicken wings can certainly hold their own against any bar in Buffalo! Check out this humorous dispatch in the Albany Times Union (what great sports they are). From all of us at The Enjoy Troy Co., we hope you have a wonderful 2018. And wherever your travels take you, we ask that you spread a little Troy to the world! ;) https://www.facebook.com/events/957878554369049/permalink/960315124125392/
