8 years ago today, little Eli Medof of Marietta GA and of Tritt Elementary School started raising funds for the children of East Rockaway School District to hel...p with Superstorm Sandy recovery. The funds Eli and his classmates at Tritt raised were eventually donated to the East Rockaway Education Foundation, Inc. and the foundation donated over $130,000.00 to the schools that fiscal year based on all the efforts like Eli’s that came in. Thank you so much Eli for leading the charge! : Alli Medof

Say It Loud and There's Music Playing: "TOM SCHLOEN!" -- Attendance topped 100 at EREF's Dinner Dance last night honoring East Rockaway's "Mr. Music", Tom Schlo...en, at the Lido Beach Golf Club. Included were colleagues, both current and retired; alumni performers from the ERHS Band and district musicals over the more than a quarter of a century Mr. Schloen has logged to date; and grateful parents of those alumni. Bolstering last night's physically present audience were: a special video featuring alumni (plus a dance routine by "Mr. Music" himself); particularly heartfelt ads in an accompanying Commemorative Journal; and comments received through Facebook from alumni unable to attend. Plentiful tributes were made by speakers, but, since this was an East Rockaway event, Tom was not going to go unscathed. Colleague Pam Murano (also a former student) called him "the older brother she never wanted" and related how when she was having difficulty preparing her remarks and mentioned this to Tom, he responded: "How difficult could it be? You're talking about me." As the audience roared, Tom's voice came from the back of the room: "I was joking! I was joking." But Pam stitched Tom back together again after skewering him -- as did retired ERHS Principal Bill Fortgang who had hired Tom back in 1987. In his own graceful remarks and in the Journal, Tom Schloen expressed his appreciation at being honored but talked about his students: "I am inspired by the energy and 'stick to it' attitude of my students. I find it amazing that they can push past whatever limitations they have in life, and then turn their individual successes into a success for a larger group." And, Tom Schloen, we might add, a teacher will lead them.... See more
The pandemic of COVID19 has had a devastating effect on all aspects of our lives in 2020, including the education of our children. We worry that additional revenue is needed to help meet the ever-changing daily challenges facing our district's teachers and students. In 1998, five residents gathered in the ER High School conference room to form EREF, the East Rockaway Education Foundation. They were: Richard Meagher, Ed Sieban, Gordon Fox, Vicki Alspector and Ken Pacheco. In ...2020, founding President Richard Meagher reached out to the remaining three founders, and all agreed to support the EREF Founders Challenge. We propose to raise funds through EREF to provide the ERSD with special aid to help fight the effects of COVID19 on the education of our children. This is a grassroots effort. There will not be meetings nor events to raise these funds. This will be a word of mouth, telephone, social media and snail mail effort. Our goal: $10,000. We are off to a promising start as initial pledges total $1,600 to launch the EREF Founders Challenge. Thank you in advance for supporting this very important, community effort. Be well, wear a mask, and be safe.
Thank you, Sponsors.
